There were 31 Rotarians and 12 Students of the Month, their counselors and their parents/guardians/siblings in attendance. It was a no ZOOM Day on Earth Day.

 

The sound system was playing songs from Fleetwood Mac, Billie Elish, (and another one). The visuals on the screen showed industrial bearings being made, post tensioned cables, reinforcing bars, etc. all in different stages of manufacturing and placement in construction. It reminded me of when I worked at a steel mill cutting and bending rebar for highway and building projects, although we had no music to listen to and Earth Day had only just begun.

 

President Michael Kvistad opened the 41st meeting of the year and the 5,591st meeting of the Rotary Club of Everett with the Pledge of Allegiance. 

 

Ashley Bolden’s Thought of the Day comes from the American Philosopher John Dewey who said “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself”.

 

There were no visiting Rotarians at today’s meeting.  The guests included the Students of the Month, their counselors and their parents/guardians/siblings that will be introduced during the Program.

 

Liz Stenning told us about Sip & Shop (a wine/spirit walk and shopping opportunity) in downtown Everett on May 1^st between 4:00 and 8:00 pm.

 

President Elect Kelli Thode and Heather Barnhart reminded us of the blood drive at the Everett Elks on April 25^th.

 

President Elect Kelli thanked the team captains for their help with this year’s Fundraiser, which as of today, totals $49,000.00.  Kelli also passed out tickets to those who have donated, and those tickets are to be deposited in a prize box or boxes of your choice.  At our meeting on May 29^th tickets will be selected from those boxes and the winners will be announced.

 

Heather Barnhart passed out a flyer advertising a golf tournament put on by the Rotaract Club of Snohomish County.  The Tournament will support efforts for clean water in the village of Maya Jaguar in Guatemala.  The event will take place on May 17^th at Cedarcrest Golf Course, the price for a foursome is $500.00.  For registering and for more information please contact: HTTPS://FUNDRAISER.BID/GOLF4GUAT

 

President Michael asked all three students of the month to select a trivia category from those he rattled off and they would be asked a question from their chosen category. Will chose Science, Isabella chose English, and Gloria chose History.  When each one was given their trivia question each one of them answered their question correctly. (Way to go Students of the Month).

 

Kari Quaas gave a $100.00 bellringer, happy for having attended the Grateful Dead and John Mayer concerts at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

 

Kelly Shepard was $20.00 happy for the success of the Everett High School auction.  As a highlight the Fund a Need brought in $60,000.00 all by itself.

 

Ian Saltzman was happy for Kelly and Everett High School as he gave $100.00, and the bell rang again.

 

Past President Mark Valentine celebrated his 50^th wedding anniversary with a $100.00 bellringer.

 

Krissy Davis gave $27.00 for her wedding anniversary.

 

President Elect Kelli donated 2 tickets to the April 25^th concert by Heart to Heart, a Heart tribute band which also included a signed drumstick (I believe from the original Heart drummer) and tee shirts. Past President Neil Angst paid $50.00 and won the auction prize.

 

Winner number 1 - Past President Will McMahan won a purple Washington Huskies tumbler and some candy.

 

Winner number 2 - Our student of the month from EHS, Will Kilmer, won a clear Washington Huskies tumbler and some candy.

 

Winner number 3 - Our student of the month from CHS, Gloria Guzman-Rosales, won a clear Washington Huskies tumbler and some candy.

 

 

Jen Selders, the counselor from Everett High School, introduced their Student of the Month, Will Kilmer.

 

Will lives a life of service above self.  In addition to his Interact service opportunities, Will spent his junior year volunteering at the Senior Center, the VOA, the Everett Animal Shelter, and Providence Everett Medical Center. He was involved in the Rotary District 5050’s Youth Adventures in Leadership (YAIL) weekend.  Will spent a year raising money to fund his trip with Rotary’s YES Program to Guatemala where he helped build stoves and water filters for villagers. This year, as Interact’s President, he is motivating his fellow club members to help others in need.

 

Will thanked our club for the recognition we gave him today.

 

Cascade High School’s Student of the Month, Gloria Guzman-Rosales, was introduced by her counselor, Cindy Kuntz.

 

Gloria has been actively involved in clubs such as Link Crew, Key Club, National Honor Society, DECA, and Mock Trial.  A teacher said she was a standout student in his class, showcasing exceptional leadership skills and academic excellence, and she played a pivotal role helping Cascade’s DECA team earn national recognition. She plans to study law at the University of Washington and hopes to become an immigration attorney, with the goal of helping families stay together and eliminating the fear of deportation.

 

Gloria was very appreciative of being our Student of the Month from Cascade. 

 

Tricia Schultz, counselor, introduced Isabella Gallegos Sequoia High School’s Student of the Month.

 

Isabella (Ella) said one of her favorite times has been in Leadership class, where she embraced a love of helping others and working together. Her leadership teacher said, “Ella has shown an admirable capacity to receive and apply feedback.  Ella has taken a lead on planning the Sequoia High School Spring Bazaar that raises money so that every student will receive a yearbook for free.” Outside of school, Ella loves expressing herself through art and crocheting.  She even has her own Etsy shop where she sells her handmade creations.

 

Ella thanked our club for recognizing her at today’s meeting.
