THE ROTARY CLUB OF EVERETT meeting on July 3, 2018, was called to order at 12:05 by President Amy Norman. Everett High School JROTC cadets presented the color guard and Antonia Norman led in the Pledge of Allegiance. (We were greeted at the door by Greeters Tony Orso and Kara Petrasek.) #1 Meeting for President Amy Norman.
The Thought of the Day came to us by Sean Kelly. Rotary has a powerful message. Preach what you practice.
Introduction of Visiting Rotarians Tony Orso. No visiting Rotarians. Guests include Claire Lu, youth exchange student; Nikolai Norman, Delaney Norman, Antonia Norman and Mikal Norman, Amy Norman’s family.
Announcements:
- Induction of Brenda Bolanos-Ivory proposed by Ed Peterson, Classification – Community Services. Brenda has been in Everett for two years. She is active in the homeless initiative.
- Clothes for Kids & Food Bank Volunteering – Nick Hansen thanked everyone who picked up clothes at 16 schools. VOA Food Bank volunteering is July 26th, 11am – 1pm.
- Fellowship Committee – Tony Orso announced that the next Fellowship event is the Everett AquaSox baseball game on August 2nd. Family members and other Rotary clubs are invited. More fellowships are being planned.
- Card for Kaye Phinney (sister passed away) – card for everyone to sign for Kaye.
- Rotary shirts for sale – Judi announced that previously worn Rotary shirts are for sale - $5.00. More apparel will be available in the coming weeks.

- Bob Biel – Bucks to report on his trip on a curb and a ride to the Providence hospital and a taxi ride back to car.
- Tony Orso - $100 Practice what you preach as he was thankful for the card he received from the club.
- Betsy - $20 thankful for the Port of Everett allowing the kiteboarding festival, sad that Claire is leaving, and is hired as a private therapist to a Austria skier.
- Randy Hansen - $20 Sad news that Evelyn Hoffman passed away, Paul Stoot’s phone ringing during lunch.
- Paul Stoot - $20 birthday bucks for his mother, Annie Brossier, 81st birthday.
- Janice Ellis - $100 Beginning new year to end a year – Claire leaving and a successful youth exchange year.
- Tammy Dunn - $100 birthday bucks, honored to be a Campfire Snohomish County Board member, and excited that the Skate America skater line up has been announced.
- Dale Packard - $100 birthday bucks for July birthday.
- Antonia Norman & Mikal Norman - $100 happy for her mom as Rotary President and thankful for going to Rotary International Convention.
- Amy Norman - $20 thankful for going to International Rotary Convention
- Randy Hansen – paid $100 for an article in a trade magazine.
- Glen Bachman – paid $100 for several articles about the Port of Everett in the Herald.

Program “ROTC” presented by Senior Chief, Carl Arbogast introduced by Glen Bachman
Senior Chief Arbogast talked about the Eve of Change to the Navy. In 1850 Congress outlawed “Floggy” where men were tied to the Mast and whiplashed. Many phrases came from the Navy – Cats out of bag, Room to swing a cat.
JROTC is about Integrity, Character, Respect, Trust, and Disciple. It is not to prepare for military service. The Army started the JROTC program in 1946. All branches of the military service have the JROTC program. JRTOC teaches core values and no military service is expected.
Schools volunteer to have a JROTC program. Everett High School offers the Navy JROTC program for Cascade, Jackson, and Everett High School. JROTC program offers career technology classes and they offer a broad spectrum of what they can offer to the students.
With the JROTC programs, all branch of service pay for the equipment, uniform, and teacher salaries. The students receive credits for history, PE and Arts by being in the JROTC program.
Benefits of students being in JROTC programs are GPA Higher, attendance increases, decrease in disciplinary actions, and continue higher education. JROTC programs provides opportunities such as work skills experience, be prepared for their lives and community service.
The Everett High School Navy JROTC program has done 1,500 man hour services. The Navy JROTC competes in competitions. Everett Navy JROTC is the best in the region for the last two years. For the Combined Drill competition, Everett Navy JROTC is the best in the state.
There are 115 cadets this last school year.
