ROTARY CLUB OF EVERETT
 

President Michael Kvistad opened the meeting at 12:02 pm with the Pledge of Allegiance. Today was our 18^th meeting of the year and the 5,568^th meeting of the Rotary Club of Everett.

 

President Michael received a note from Rose Goulet. She is proud of her dad and his service about self

 

Kari Quaas, introduced Sam Hoff, YMCA of Snohomish County – Everett.

 

A photo was taken of President Michael, Neil Angst, Ralph Quaas, and Walt Greenwood as they are participating in Movember.

 

President Michael gave a report on the Board Meeting. His report covered Student of the Month, World Community Service, Membership, Scholarships, and Budget. He asked for the members to consider signing up for a committee. There are a few committees who need more members.

 

Kelli Thode, President-Elect, gave an update on cool activities that the Membership Committee is hosting over the next couple of months. November 13^th is a fun gathering at Wicked Cellars. We need someone to help on the night of the event. There will be a special event at Kindred Kitchen in December. More fun activities are coming in January and February.

 

Heather Barnhart was happy has she was at Everett High School promoting the Youth Exchange for next year’s outbound student.

 

Mark Valentine had a great evening with Toby, Rotary Exchange Student at the Seattle Symphony.

 

Will McMahan spent three weeks in Florida helping the Red Cross on the two recent hurricanes.

 

Josh O’Connor was happy to be at the meeting. He asked for a moment of silence for the Marysville Pilchuck High School shooting on October 24, 2014.

 

Jerry Tucker had no complaints about the Herald covering the Oregon Ducks.

 

President Michael is celebrating his birthday on October 30^th.

Winner number 2 – Brian Hollingshead selected the book and candy.

 

Winner number 3 – Will McMahan selected the candy and tshirt.

 

President Michael introduced Josh O’Connor, publisher of the Daily Herald. Josh donated a book, Port of Everett-First 100 Years, to the raffle. He reminisced about the Don Senter autographed cartoon that Don had done several years ago.

 

Josh talked about the state of the media. More than 2,000 newspapers have closed since 2004. We must seek new ways to report on the news. Senator Cantwell has advocated for local media and to protect journalism. Many businesses are advertising on Google, Meta and Facebook.

 

Josh has been having a conversation at the state level and at the federal level to find ways to support the local media. Employment challenges is one that has been a struggle to recover as there is a lack of journalists. He has been having conversations with his staff to find ways to rebuild our community. The Herald is short three positions to have a full team.

 

The Herald is working with the Snohomish County Community Foundation on a pilot program. The pilot program will pay for positions in Climate Change, Education Investigation, and Healthcare.
