ROTARY CLUB OF EVERETT
MEETING:
President Kelli Thode led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and into her/our 18th meeting of the year and our 5,618th meeting of the Rotary Club of Everett.
THOUGHT OF THE DAY:
Past President Rose Goulet apologized for her crazy hair that was formed by her static producing witches hat. Rotary is a non-denominational, non-political organization that strives to do good in the world.
The Statue of Liberty, which was dedicated on this day in 1886, is a symbol of hope and opportunity for everyone, which we as Rotarians and our Service above Self help to provide.
INTRODUCION OF VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS:
President Kelli introduced Past District Governor Linda Murray and District Governor Nominee Shawn O’Donnell.
President Kelli also presented a visiting Rotarian, Sham…, and his wife, from India. Later on in the meeting our club and Sham… exchanged banners and a picture was taken of our guests and all club members in attendance.
President Kelli introduced Jennifer Hem (who will be inducted later in this meeting) and her husband, Sam Hem.
Kari Quaas introduced Marci Volmer, the CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Snohomish County.
Heather Barnhart introduced our exchange student from Japan, Hakumi Matsumoto.
RESOLUTION:
Committee Chair Past President Bob Bavasi presented a resolution of Past President Larry Hanson.
- Born in 1937 in Southeast Everett along with 5 older siblings. He referred to himself as “A kid from Jordan Road”.
- At Everett High School Larry was the catcher on the baseball team.
- After High School Larry joined the Army where he spent 6 months on active duty and the next 5.5 years in the Army reserves.
- Larry earned his associate’s degree from Everett Junior College and his Bachelor’s in
- Business Management from the University of Washington.
- While still in school he took a job as a messenger for The Everett Herald, which turned out to become a 45-year career as he rose through the ranks to become Publisher of the newspaper.
- Larry was a very community minded person who truly gave of himself. He had been active in over 30 civic and professional associations, a true leader in our Rotary Club, and a great example of a person who lived the Rotary motto of “Service above Self”.
A copy of this Resolution will be provided to the family of Larry along with our appreciation of his Service to our Club and to our community.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
President Kelli made the following announcements:
- Ralph Quaas’s memorial Service will be held on Saturday November 8th at 1:00 pm at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Everett.
- Past President Roy Yates passed away recently. There has not been any news on when his service may be held.
- On Thursday November 6th please come to the Carl Gipson Center to help serve lunch in Celebration of Veteran’s Day.
- On November 12th there will be a coffee hour at Artisans Book and Coffee, starting at 9:00 am.
- On November 13th, Past President Rose is hosting an afterhours Wine tasting at Wick-Ed Wine Club. Also joining will be members from Everett Port Gardner and South Everett Mukilteo Rotaries.
Heather Barnhart updated us on another successful blood drive that also included the service work from The Elks and Snohomish County Rotaract. There were 26 units of blood collected for a total of 455 units of blood collected to date which translates to over 1,365 lives that have been positively affected by these blood drives.
NEW MEMBER:
Jennifer Hem, classification Financial Services, was introduced by President Kelli. Welcome back to the club Jennifer.
HAPPY DOLLARS AND BIRTHDAY BUCKS:
Past President Rose was $100.00 happy that she received a clean bill of health after fighting breast cancer for the last 6 years.
District Governor Nominee Shawn was happy that Past President Rose had such good news from her doctor, and he was happy to point out that today’s LOG reporter helped him out with the design and plans for his restaurant on 128th Street.
Past President Bob gave a donation as he pointed out that Shawn is running for one of 3 positions to be on the Charter Review Board for the County.
RAFFLE:
Winner number 1 - Past President Will McMahon selected the pink wine and the candy.
Winner number 2 - Bruce Timm selected the Moscow Mule mug with an airliner size bourbon bottle and chocolates.
.
Winner number 3 - Past President Bob got the other Moscow Mule mug with a small Tito’s bottle along with a chocolate bar.

The winner of the costume contest was Speaker of the House Mike Johnson who will receive a $25.00 gift certificate once Congress is called back in session.
