Kelli Thode started the 45^th meeting of the year and the 5,645^th meeting of the Rotary Club of Everett with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Lindsy Gagnon read a poem, “Blessing in the Chaos”, by Jan Richardson. “To all that is chaotic in you, let there come silence. Let there be a calming of the clamoring, a stilling of the voices that have laid their claim on you, that have made their home in you, that go with you even to the holy places but will not let you rest, will not let you hear your life with wholeness or feel the grace that fashioned you. Let what distracts you cease. Let what divides you cease. Let there come an end to what diminishes and demeans, and let depart all that keeps you in its cage. Let there be an opening into the quiet that lies beneath the chaos, where you find the peace you did not think possible and see what shimmers within the storm”.

 

Neha Kaur was inducted as the newest member of the Rotary Club of Everett. Her sponsors are Ashley Bolden and Janice Ellis. Welcome Neha!

 

Neha Kaur, who was newly inducted into the club today, gave her classification talk because she is leaving in July to India to visit her recently formed non-profit and she wanted to visit Rotary Clubs in India and exchange Rotary flags. She left her corporate job in marketing to start a non-profit focused on women’s health in rural areas. She recently returned from India where she worked with 80 Tibetan students in a boarding school located at 14,000 feet elevation in the Himalayas. She is developing an e-commerce website for the women in the village to use to sell their goods on the websites. With the earned money they plan to help to pay for food, medications and computer labs. Neha is hoping to harness the power of Rotary International to help provide much needed items for the community.

 

Neha has a 6-year-old son named Zorin. She was born in India and grew up in Everett.

 

World Community Service Committee Members President-Elect Kari Petrasek, Janice Ellis, Paul Stoot and George Bowden joined the meeting by Zoom from Dajabon, Dominican Republic. They are delivering books to the newly formed library and meeting with school children, checking out the Rotary sponsored gardens and water projects. There are plenty of opportunities for ANY of us to get involved... whether it is planning and supporting these international trips or physically going on the trips. If interested, please consider joining the World Community Service Committee.

 

Van Valey House Cleanup is this Thursday starting at 4:00. The house is located at 2130 Colby Ave. This project is in conjunction with the Everett-Port Garder Rotary Club. There is also a social gathering on Wednesday at 4:30 at Scuttlebutt Brewery to limber up for Thursday.

 

Krissy Davis reminded the club about the AVID shopping Spree June 2^nd and 4^TH. There is a need for a few more club members to participate, helping the students pick out needed school supplies. Contact Krissy Davis for more information and to sign up.

 

Krissy also reminded the club about the Leadership Snohomish County graduation class of 2026 is this Thursday at 5:00. Come see the Impact Projects they have created. Krissy will be graduating as well. Congratulations Krissy!

 

Committee Assignment Forms are due today! Be sure to get yours in or President-Elect Kari will assign you to the Log Committee.

 

Kelli Thode Club Assembly is scheduled May 26 at our next meeting. We will be discussing the Strategic Plan for the future of the club.

 

Jim Schrader Rotary Park Cleanup and BBQ June 13^TH, 9 to Noon. An email will be sent out soon to confirm your presence. Please respond so we order enough burgers and ice cream.

 

Kari Quaas was thankful for all the people who made the Rotary Scholarship a huge success. She and Russ Kimball organized another amazing night with over $370,000 awarded to deserving students. Kari thanked all the club members who contributed to the evening. She was also a Bell Ringer thankful for a “Girls Retreat” last weekend and recommends we all take some time to hang out with friends.

 

Steve Miller was happy about a trip to Disneyland with his 5- and 3-year-old grandchildren. They all had a wonderful time while walking 24,000 steps. Thankfully, through the magic of Disney, Steve’s wallet was much lighter for the long walk.

There was a reminder to donate more prizes to the Raffle Committee.

 

Winner Number 1 – Steve Miller won a Starbucks card and an amazing book by Elbert Hubbard titled “Elbert Hubbard’s Scrapbook”. The book was donated by Mark Valentine who rebound the book due to the poor quality of the paper used in 1923, when it was printed. The scrapbook contains more than seven hundred quotations meant to inspire genius with favored sayings of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century.

 

Winner Number 2 – Henry Newton selected red wine and mangos. Excellent pairing.

 

Winner Number 3 – Will McMahan receive white wine and candy. Also, an excellent pairing.

 

Tammy Dunn presented an update on the FIFA World Cup Soccer tournament and the Snohomish County Sports Commission Waterfront Watch Party at the Everett Waterfront Boxcar Park. There will 6 matches in Seattle and 7 matches in Vancouver, BC, in the month of June. There is anticipation that a large number of fans from all over the world will be in Western Washington to attend the matches occurring over 4 to 5 weeks. The dates of the Everett Waterfront Watch Party are June 11, 12, 18 and 19. There is expected to be a significant economic opportunity for local businesses, regional and global visibility and energy across the city of Everett. The event is free. There will be food trucks, beer garden, giant screen to watch the matches, music and a kid’s zone.

 

There will be Everett Transit buses from Everett Station to the waterfront and from Tulalip Casino to the Everett waterfront. Tammy is looking for volunteers to help with the Kid’s Zone, Matchday guides, Kickoff welcome crew and set-up and take-down crew. Be on the lookout for an e-mail from Tammy with instructions on how to sign up.
