Did you know that today, April 23^rd, is National Email Day, Canada Book Day, Impossible Astronaut Day, International Creator Day, International English Language Day, Movie Theater Day, National Brian Day (not just Hollingshead), National English Muffin Day, National Lost Dog Awareness Day, National Picnic Day, Saint George’s Day, School Bus Driver Appreciation Day, Shakespeare Day, Spanish Language Day, World Book Day, World Laboratory Day, World Table Tennis Day, and National Chance Encounter Day.

 

Vice President Kelli Thode filled in for President Neil Angst.  Kelli led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and into our 38^h meeting of the year and the 5,541^st meeting of the Rotary Club of Everett. As of the opening bell there were 26 Rotarians and guests in person and 3 Rotarian ZOOMERS.

 

Vice President Kelli set the stage for what was to come during our Club Assembly later, in the program.  She talked about the opportunities we all have as Rotarians to have chance encounters with other Rotarians along with relationships we have formed because of our involvement in Rotary.  Her chance encounter last week was running into Kari Petrasek and George Bowden at Sec Tac Airport as she was returning home from a trip and Kari and George were on their way to Dajabon.

 

David Chan introduced vising Rotarians District Governor David Lukov (Mount Vernon Club) and former NBA and WSU Cougar basketball player James Donaldson (Kent Sunrise Club). They were able to join us between their Rotary sponsored AVID speaking roles taking place at Eisenhower Middle School today, that was organized by David Chan and Janice Ellis.

 

 

 

Vice President Kelli reminded us that on Friday morning April 26^th there is a Board Meeting at 7:30 am.  All are welcome to attend in person or via ZOOM.

 

District Governor David told us about District 5050’s annual conference to be held in Mount Veron on May 3^rd.

-  On Friday the 3^rd between 5:00 - 8:00 pm there will be a bowling event that includes dinner.  A second event is a social mixer starting at 8:00 pm at Max Dales Restaurant.

-  On Saturday the 4^th between 8:00 am and 5:30 pm there will be registration, sessions and speakers, lunch, more sessions and speakers and dinner.

-  On Sunday the 5^th there will be a service project at Camp Korey that will include breakfast and lunch with volunteer work in between.

 

Vice President Kelli thanked all who participated in the interviews of potential scholarship winners last Saturday.  The winners will be announced and given their certificates at the Scholarship Presentation at the Everett High School Civic Auditorium on May 9^th.

 

Vice President Kelli also mentioned that the Past President’s dinner will be held at 6:00 pm on May 22^nd.  The location is yet to be determined.

 

Anna Marie Laurence was $20.00 happy for all the Rotarians who helped in the interviews of the students last Saturday.  She especially wanted to thank ZOOM Master Past President Greg Lineberry, the team captains, Past President Tammy Dunn and Sandy for being refreshment hosts and greeters, and President Neil who provided signs to guide the students to their correct interview room.

 

President Elect Michael Kvistad said he had contacted several potential places that we could possibly hold our meetings in the future and that he will have more information for us in the next few weeks.

 

David Chan was happy how well the AVID presentations have been going the last two days at Eisenhower Middle School.

 

District Governor David told a story how he was at his bank and how excited the teller was, who noticed his Rotary pin, to tell him how happy she was that Rotary had given her son a scholarship.

 

Past President Larry O’Donnell gave $100.00.  He was surprised last Saturday night at the annual Everet High School Blue and Gold Auction to have Principal Kelly Shepard announce to the audience that the library at Everett High will be renamed the Lawrence E. O’Donnell Library.  There will be a dedication on June 5th from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm with a program starting at 6:00 pm.

 

Mike Holcomb was $100.00 happy for his 58th wedding anniversary.

 

Winner number 1 - Past President Greg Lineberry selected a bottle of red wine.

 

Winner number 2 - Mike Holcomb picked the free lunch.

 

Winner number 3 - David Chan took home the final prize, a bottle of white wine.

 

Kelli introduced James Donaldson who only had a few minutes to talk as he, David Chan, and District Governor David were leaving soon for their AVID career speaking engagements at Eisenhower.  James, having had a successful career in the NBA formed a non-profit in 2019 called Your Gift of Life Foundation, which Supports and Encourages Mental health Awareness and Suicide Prevention.  James will be back to present this program at a future date.

 

The Club Assembly, led by Kelli, was about connecting with Rotary, engaging our members, making connections, finding common interests, involvement locally and internationally, and recruiting new members.  Kelli wanted us all to share something about our own experiences with chance encounters in our time in Rotary.

 

Kelli was in Texas attending a conference with her daughter when someone in her daughter’s conference, who happened to know she was from the Seattle area, handed them a business card asking if they might happen to know the person. The card read Rise Up Academy and was Paul Stoot’s who was in town with his fiancé.

 

President Neil Angst (He was here briefly) interviewed a student last Saturday who attended EVCC.  She was a Rotarian in Kenya and wanted to come to college in the United States.  Neil asked her why she choose to come to EVCC and she said Goggle indicated it was a great place to go to nursing

school.

 

Brian Hollingshead said Everett is the biggest little town. (you get chance encounters with other Rotarians everyday)

 

Past President John Olson will be on his way to attend the international convention in Singapore this Spring.  He will be flying to San Francisco first and will be boarding another plane with some Bay Area Rotarians.  On their way to the convention center John will be able to tell his new Rotarian friends that his wife Mary Kate knows one of the architects who was involved in the design.

 

David Chan grew up in Hong Kong and to be a Rotarian there and then was not an option unless one had good connections.  When he moved to Everett and met Past District Governor Kathy DeTurk she invited him to our club and he felt very welcome.  Since that time, his travels have led him all over the world where at one point he was proud to see a Rotary emblem on a water pump in a very rural area of Mongolia.

 

District Governor David was at the Toronto airport, and something wasn’t going well trying to go through their “TSA”.  He was tired and not happy as he had to back track to the airline counter.  When he started talking to the agent, she saw his Rotary pin and told him she had been in Interact in High School and wanted to get into a Rotaract Club.  He got her contact information, and she got his “TSA” paperwork straightened out, he got home on time and she is now in Rotaract in Toronto.

 

Past President Larry O’Donnell remembers long time Rotarians Bob Humphries, Steve Saunders, who gave so much to this community, and Loren Baker who at the age of 90, was registering an attractive woman at a Rotary event and as he rubbed his hands over his head said, “Oh to be 70 again”.

 

Past President Steve Miller has had the opportunity to go all over the world to water skiing competitions and he was amazed how many of the international competitors are Rotarians.

 

Liz Stenning volunteered to take a daughter and her father on our Rotary sponsored shopping spree.  The father turned out to be in property management in downtown Everett and now Liz sees and talks to him all the time.  (another chance encounter developed by Rotary).

 

Kari Quaas was previously in the Seattle Club but didn’t like it. Our Everett Club just feels right.

 

Ashley Bolden was on a vacation and stopped in at the Powell River Rotary Club where she was greeted with open arms, and she really enjoyed her time there.

 

Anna Marie’s chance encounter was in Coeur d’Alene, with her son John when she saw a large sign that indicated that the Rotary Club was the sponsor of a large event.  She also mentioned her sister-in-law who was in Kenya for 14 years after receiving a Rotary sponsored graduate scholarship (I hope I have this right).

 

President Elect Michael was in Mill Bay on Vancouver Island where in walked by one of those mini libraires that you see on some residential streets and low and behold it was Rotary sponsored.

 

Past President Bob Bavasi unfolded his non-winning lottery tickets in a manner that looked like an accordion held upside down.  This image mimicked the business card that former Everett Rotarian Andy Susuki had that displayed all the businesses that he was involved in. He was a character, the last Bob knew Andy had moved to Costa Rica to start another business.

 

Past President Andy Hall has met many fine friends at Rotary who he probably would never have met if he hadn’t joined our Club.

 

Meagan Dunn mentioned how many Rotarians she noticed at the State of the City address.

 

A memorable Rotary moment for Jim Hoover was his “initiation day” when Past President Steve Miller had him turn around and told him all the members in the Everett Rotary Club had his back.

 

Ralph Quaas said a good way to meet Rotarians from around the world was to volunteer to be on the Sargent of Arms Committee at the Rotary International Convention.

 

Walt Greenwood retired and moved out here from New Jersey. He didn’t know anybody in Everett but by chance he met the manager of Paine Field who invited him to our Rotary meeting. Walt said it was like a Venus Fly Trap, he was captured and has enjoyed the good things and good people in our club ever since.

 

Henry Newton was asked by a student he was interviewing for the scholarships last weekend, why are you a Rotarian?  Henry said he first joined for business reasons but what is really important is the friendships you make and the good work we do locally and internationally.

 

Past President Greg Lineberry has a lot of or maybe even dozens of Rotary pins that are conveniently pinned to his shirts, sweaters, and coats. Wherever he goes that pin becomes a conversation piece and connects him to Rotarians and other interested people wondering what Rotary does.
