Meeting of October 20, 2015 #16 (5124).................................... President, Deborah Wright, Presiding
Thought  for  the  Day was offered by Jerry Tucker who shared the wisdom of stand-up comedian Henny Younman whose secret to a long and happy  marriage as follows:  “My wife and I eat out  twice a week – she eats out  on Tuesday and I eat out  on Friday.”  Jerry was filling in for  Zak Parpia  who  arrived late after being delayed getting out of  the Himalayas.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests introduced by Dave Surface:  visiting Rotarians – none – and guests  of  Rotarians  as follows:
*With  Will  McMahon – Debbie  Kavanaugh with North Homes Realty/Century 21,
*With  Jessica Mitchell – Shelly  Pattison- PUD Account Manager
*With Sally Lancaster – Kathryn Nelson – new to the area.
*With  Gary  Cohn – June and Jennifer Tian - parents of EHS Student of the month Hank Tian.

Happy Bucks
  • From Denney Austin who was happy over the $60,000 raised at the Bethany of the NW fundraiser in which Mark Valentine was awarded the Raili M. Hanson award for Community Service.  [Note: Award is named for  the  late  wife of former Everett Herald  publisher and Rotary Club of  Everett  PP Larry Hanson.]
  • From Mary Toews whose son brought  home his first paycheck, and took mom  out  to  dinner!
  • From Roy Yates who had the bad news football trifecta:  a) grandson who  played for Kamiak and lost, and then b) the U of W who played Tucker’s Ducks, and c) the Seahawks who again managed to blow a 4th  Quarter lead.
  • From Gary Cohn who thanked Alaska Airlines for getting him to  Washington DC and back on time where he attended a very worthwhile  conference on educating homeless youth.
  • From George Petrie who  had $100 – 96 for  his birthday, and 4 more for hoping he is  here for  four more years.
  • From Mark Valentine who  was $100 honored to be the Raili Hanson recipient.
  • From Jerry Tucker who again took his life in his hands and gloated about those Ducks.
  • From Dave Koenig - $100  to applaud  and  acknowledge George  Petrie’s life and service. From George Bowden who with some help was able to raise $45,000 in  program sales for  Campfire at the recent Seahawks game.
  • From Andrea Sekora whose daughter turned 8, and whose friend had joined a Rotary ClubAnd finally $100 from Zak Parpia who was happy to see that his name tag had not been pulled.

Birthday Boy George Petrie and his life  were applauded and celebrated with a big cake, a round of HAPPY BIRTHDAY, and the well wishes of all club  members to George and his wife of 70 years, Thelma.

New Member:  George Bowden introduced a new  member – Deane Minor, classification Legal Services. Deane is a partner in Tuohy Minor Kruse, has a very  long Everett legal pedigree, and has the wisdom to be married to a librarian.

Students of the Month:
* Matthew Straugh from Cascade HS with Bob Beil
* Hank Tian from Everett HS with  Gary Cohn
* Katie Baggett Sequoia HS with Tom Koenig
If there was ever any doubt why our  club supports young people in our community, these three students certainly eliminated that doubt.  The three were very different, but all very poised and clear about what kind of future they wanted.

BIG WINNERS at the Electronic Business Machines Fireside were 1) Tammy Dunn, 2) Greg Thode, 3) Mary Toews, and 4) Ralph  Quass.  All this was reported by Past President Dick Schlosser who also noted that the firm donaged $300 to the Everett Rotary Youth  Foundation for the 29  club  members who  attended. WOWZER!!

ProgramIntroduced by Jeff Cornish covered both our own club website – EVROTARY.ORG, and
The Rotary International website: Rotary.org.  Members were asked to bring their iphones, ipads, and
the  like.  (Some member devices turned out to be more robust than others.)  Then Judi Edwards and
Marc Baker led the club through a guided tour of how to find information, and how  to update your own
information.  A good program – which  undoubtedly answered a multitude of  questions.

Raffle Winners – Always loads of anticipation for the fabulous prizes  in the  drawing – and today
the winners were Randy Hansen, Paul Stoot, and Steve Ellis

Finallymembers were reminded to sign the card for family of the late John “Hoppy” HopkinsHoppy was a long-time member, NW Mutual Life insurance agent, Colgate grad, Navy Vet.
