The Rotary Club of Everett
Rotarians were warmly greeted by Gail Larson and Kelly Shepherd for the meeting of October 2, 2018.
Prior to officially starting the meeting, President Amy Norman shared 2 exciting pieces of news!
- Neil Angst has obtained a reissued copy of our Club’s charter and we can stop searching!
Thank you, Neil!
- Berry Sign Systems will permanently install 2 Rotary Club of Everett signs at the entry to Legion Golf Club. We won’t need to rely upon the portable sign! Thank you
President Amy then opened her 14th meeting at 12:05, leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Howie Bargreen offered a humorous Thought of the Day.

As meeting sponsor, Tammy Dunn, Snohomish County Sports Commission, gave a great overview. They are very active sponsoring events such as the upcoming October 19-21 Skate America, the US Figure Skating competition, to be televised on NBC Sports and the NWAC basketball championships in March, 2019.

- Rich Toyer: is getting married to Karen this Saturday and will honeymoon in Mexico in November! President Amy complimented Rich on all of his Rotary pins and medallions!
- Tom Koenig: joined Rotary and opened his veterinary clinic in 1985 and has just sold his practice and building! He will remain on staff for 2 more years. He’s had perfect Rotary attendance!
- Jim Staniford: 38th wedding anniversary with his wife, Karen.
- Sean George: encouraged all to attend an event for Mari's place.
- David Chan is very happy to be joining Rotary again!
- Betsy Baker Bold: is happy to be home from Europe. She will leave once again mid-October.
- Jim Haugen: presented a check for $2,040 from the Lake Stevens Club for the Wheel Chairs.
- Gail Larson: hosted “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” and enjoyed her surprise guests!
- Ralph Quaas: had neck surgery this past week and said it’s pretty painful.
- Kaye Phinney: enjoyed “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” at Gail Larson’s and encouraged all Rotarians to attend the next time it’s offered.
- Mary Toews: has 100% volunteers at Mary’s Place and works with children ages 7-17 years old.

New Rotarian and Everett Public Library Executive Director, Abby Cooley , gave a great overview of our valued library. Highlights include:
- 70 employees, with 5 departments at 2 locations: Downtown Everett and South Everett
- The Library is governed by a Board
- Primary funding is from the City of Everett
- 1.12m materials are checked out annually
- 79.5k audio & e-books are checked out annually
- 515k annual visits
- 510k annual visits to the website
The Library is more than just books!
- They help people find jobs by offering internet access
- They are an economic engine for small businesses
- They promote literacy for children – adults
- They help women
- They welcome everybody; it’s a neutral/safe zone
- Libraries increase home values
