Rotary Log 2.21.17
Rotary Log Everett Rotary Meeting - February 21, 2017

Today’s greeters were Sean George and Adam Ballout, President Ed opened his 33rd meeting and led us all in the Pledge of Allegiance.
This meeting was special in that today’s Log follows Volume 1, Number 1 by 100 years! For those in attendance, copies of that log were on our tables. It mentioned 39 members present at the meeting and listed 52 Charter members. Talk about a gathering of Who’s Who in Everett at that time!

Visiting Rotarians: None
Guests: None

Club Meeting Sponsor: Joe Gaffney with Gaffney Construction.

Induction of New Members: Rick Comeau, proposed by Shelly Smith, was inducted into the club. His classification is Venue Management.

Committee Announcements:
Lyle Ryan reminded us that next Tuesday, the 28th, is our “Fourth Tuesday Bring a Prospective Member as a Guest” day.
Greg Lineberry provided an update on the upcoming trip with students to the Dominican Republic 3/31 through 4/7.
Amy Norman gave a very uplifting update on this year’s fundraiser. A great way to meet our goals and have some fun at the same time.

Presidential Recollection:
Randy Hansen helped us remember his 2010-11 presidential year. His theme was “A little louder this year.” Randy paid a special tribute to Judi for all she did - and does - to keep things running smoothly and shared fond memories of Don Loken. That year we awarded $176,000 in scholarships. He finished by reminding us that Rotary is about the people.

HAPPY DOLLARS / BIRTHDAY BUCKS:
• Lyle Ryan paid to make a pitch for the Boy Scout Breakfast.
• Larry O’Donnell paid tribute to Arnold Wiggins and had a wonderful month in the desert.
• Kaye Phinney shared a crazy story about her new cell phone and was happy about a safe trip to Mexico and 75 years.
• Unfortunately there were others I was unable to hear.

Raffle:
• Wine, coffee, and a free lunch ticket went to Tom Koenig.
• Jessica Mitchell took home some wine, mints, and coffee.
• Reid Hale won wine, cookies, and coffee.

Program:
John Olson introduced Kathleen Kyle, Managing Director of the Snohomish County Public Defenders Association. This is a non-profit organization that has been around for 43 years. It is served by a volunteer Board of Directors, attorneys, investigators, social workers, administrative staff members, and I.T. folks. Kathleen emphasized the fact that juries need smart citizens to volunteer. A good community service opportunity for anyone who may be retired or has extra time. The challenges of their clients include poverty, addiction, mental illness, homelessness, impact of trauma, access to education, employment, healthcare, etc. and community bias. An interesting presentation.

Following upcoming meeting announcements and “thank you’s”, President Ed adjourned the meeting at 1:05PM.
