There were 24 Rotarians in attendance and 2 guests.

 

Today’s theme was Mother’s Day as we heard music played by Dolly Pardon, Merle Haggard, and Don McClain all with ties to mothers.

 

President Michael also introduced an off-shoot theme, “Get back on your feet”.

 

Tobi, Past President Steve Juntwait, and I were talking and Tobi said he hasn’t seen his family in months except through face time phone calls.  He said his mother misses him so much, and Steve and I said mothers will be mothers for your whole life, they worry about you, and they help you when you need to “Get back on your feet”.

 

President Michael shared a memory of last night's Game 1 of the NBA conference finals between Denver and Oklahoma.  With 10 seconds left in the game Oklahoma was at the free throw line, and up by 1 point. They missed their 2 shots and Denver’s Christian Braun

took the rebound and passed it to Aaron Gordon who drained a 3 pointer for the Denver win. But that is not the whole story.  30 seconds before this Gordon missed an easy shot that would have put Denver in the lead and then a foul by Denver put Oklahoma at the

free throw line shooting 2.  Gordon looked dejected and miserable standing at the key anticipating Oklahoma’s win. When those shots were missed and he got the ball and “Got back on his feet” he made that 3 pointer for Denver, and he was totally relieved.

 

President Michael Kvistad let us in the Pledge of Allegiance and to the beginning of our 43rd meeting of the year and the 5,593^rd meeting of the Rotary Club of Everett.

 

Ashley Bolden’s Thought of the Day was short and Sweet. “Act without expectation” by Lao Tzu.

 

Paul Stoot introduced Jose Salgado the Executive Director of Rise Up Academy.

 

Tobi Echauri, our exchange student from Paraguay was in attendance, and need no introduction.

 

President Michael gave a brief rundown of last weekend's District 5050 Conference (more to come next week along with pictures).  Besides President Michael, also in attendance was Ashley Bolden, Past President Greg Tisdale, Ralph Quaas, Kari Quaas, and Ryan Willis. (I’m sorry if I missed anyone).

 

Both Past President Henry Newton and Anna Marie Laurence told us about Past President Larry O’Donnell’s recent stay at the hospital.  He is now home recovering but cannot see any visitors. We wish you the best Larry!

 

President Michael told us about Rich Toyer having recently fallen and gotten hurt.  We hope you recover soon, Rich.

 

On May 17^th there will be an opportunity to help spruce up the Everett Museum of History at its two locations, The Van Valey House at 2130 Colby Ave. and the main museum building at 2939 Colby Ave. Our club will be joined by Everett-Port Garder, South Everett-Mukilteo and Rotaract of Snohomish County. Volunteers are needed to help in planting, spreading beauty bark, cleaning, dusting, moving artifacts, etc.  The work hours will be between 9:00

am and noon. Please help support own Barb George in getting the museum’s properties looking fresh and beautiful.

 

Anna Marie Laurence was $20.00 happy for being named as a Board of Director for the Everett Public Schools and for the volunteers (we need more) who will help in the scholarship presentation at Everett High Schools Civic Auditorium on May 20^th.  Rotarians

are to be there at 6:00 pm.

 

Mark Johnson gave $100.00 and the bells began to toll. His daughter who got her associate’s degree from Everett Community College got accepted into UC Santa Barbara and San Diego State University but has just decided that she will go to Western Washington University. The $100.00 Mark just donated is a symbol of the thousands he will save with having instate tuition.

 

President Michael’s basketball daughter scored her first basket of the season. He was much happier for her than the $5.00 donation reflected, but that is all he had.

 

Kari Quaas was happy for Anna Marie being elected to the EPS Board of Directors.

 

Ralph Quaas had a few happy words and a short story to share.

 

Winner number 1 - Past President Steve Juntwait won a bag of Hello Kitty Marshmallow’s and a small rectangular purple speaker with a gold W emblazoned on the front.

 

Winner number 2 - Heather Barnhart won a Seattle Mariners camo. baseball jersey and some marionberry jam. After the meeting I saw Tobi wearing the jersey.

 

Winner number 3 - Past President Greg Tisdale won a bottle of wine and some candy.  He donated this prize back to Rotary.

 

Barb George presented the Everett Museum of History.

Barb said she was a little out of sorts today and would have to improvise as her curator, Rebecca Monaghan, and the scheduled “wing person” for Barb was at home sick.  Barb got to the office early so that she could get her and Becca’s presentation synchronized.  When she got to the office her administration person, who had eye issues the day before, needed to be taken to a doctor as those eye issues had worsened.  This morning’s events put Barb in a perceived presentation bind. With that Barb “Got back on her feet” and gave us a very insightful look at what is happening at the two locations of the Everett Museum of History.

 

The presentation started off with some Everett historical questions from Barb and with audience participation coming up with the answers.

Barb has spent 15 years at the Everett Museum of History and prior to that she ran Little Red Schoolhouse in Everett for over 35 years.

The Van Valey House, located at 2130 Colby Avenue was built in 1914 and later was owned by Ed and Betty Morrow who eventually donated the house and property to the City of Everett.  The Everett Museum of History was fortunate to have acquired the house and property from the city.  Today the offices of the museum are housed in the building along with historical exhibits that fit perfectly with the historical interior of the home.  The museum highlights the life of the late Senator Henry M. Jackson and the father of our own Anna Marie.  The museum also has other exhibits that can be found on the Museum website.

 

The main museum building is at 2939 Colby Avenue and It at one time was the home of the Everett Herald, see trivia answer above. The building is still going through some renovations, including an elevator that will be installed to bring access to the second floor.  The current exhibit space has recently showcased a 1910 clothing exhibit. At that time most of the women’s clothes were black.  When they went out socially they usually had a lighter colored vest that many times were embroidered so as to “dress up” their black outfits.  Other exhibits of note include the 72 finely decorated Asian snuff bottles donated by the Seiver’s family, the Betty Morrow easter egg collection, and the wood carvings by Ed Morrow that depict Christmas and teddy bear themes.  There are hundreds of more artifacts and paintings all related to the history of Everett and our region.

 

President Michael divided us up into 4 groups to play Mother’s Day Triva.  The categories were Mother’s Day, Mother’s, and Bad Moms.  Each group chose a name for their team and those teams were:

-  Everett 5

-  Antiquities

-  Motely Crew

-  Momma Tribe

 

The scoring system was clear but with the random doubling of points, credits to other teams for arbitrary answers, etc. it was too much for this reporter to keep track of.  Luckily our Sargent of Arms, Ashley, kept close track of the scores and these are the results of the Trivia contest.
