Thought of the Day by Barbara George who celebrated the beginning of

Baseball Season.  She asked the question “How old would you be if you didn’t

know how old you are?”

 

Introduction of Guests and Rotarians by Tammy Dunn.

Gary Cohen introduced the guests of the Students of the Month.

Gary Cohen also introduced the Associate Superintendent of Student Learning.

Will McMahon welcomed Lou Denney an esteemed member of our Club.

 

Student of the Month Presentations:

Introduced by Gary Cohen:

Cascade High Rami Sabra  taking AP classes with course emphasis in Chemistry and Spanish, is a  swimmer & pianist. Rami is planning to pursue Civil Engineering.

 

Also from Cascade High is Martha Jeanice, whose parents are in the Army.

She is taking college and high school classes, member of DECA, in Band and

Girl Scouts. She is planning to attend Western Washington pursuing Biology.

Sequoia High Zach Hakey, Tech/Engineering focus, has a strong family focus.

He was home schooled until High School.  He was taking his high school courses

online and then went to Sequoia to finish his credits.  He plans to attend Everett

Community College in Engineering/Computer Science and then to ITT for

further education.

 

Introduced by Pat Sievers:

Everett High Jake Amonds, AVID student, first person in family to go for a

4 year degree. Planning to attend Central Washington in the ROTC program pursuing a degree in  Criminal Justice.  He then wants to become a Police Officer.  He is very thankful for the support our Club provides to the AVID Program.

 

Announcements:

Judi Edwards informed us that our Club pays for 5 people to attend the District

Training Assembly and only one person has signed up.  

Jessica Mitchell reminded us of the upcoming Fireside at Jesse O’Brien’s house

being help April 15th at 6pm.

Happy Bucks, Birthday Bucks:

Eileen Simmons - Surprise dollars because she saw a pig grazing.

Mark Nesse - Happy Birthday $ for last week, Bell Ringer.

Sonya Kranski - Went to Lake Chelan with friends and visited Koenig’s

hard cider place.  On the way home was notified that her employees were going on

strike.

Barbara George - Happy Bucks for the Everett Museum of History honoring

Ed & Betty Morrow being held April 19th at the Everett Yacht Club. The Emcee is

Larry O’Donnell and the event is being catered by Shawn O’Donnell.  Also Happy

Bucks for a new car.

Program Introduction: Gary Cohen introduced our program “Preparing students for their future not our past”

presented by Jeff Utecht.  Jeff is an educational technology consultant, educator, and

author.  He holds a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in

Technology as well as a Washington Administrative Certificate.  Jeff began his

career in an elementary public school classroom in Washington State.  In 2001, he was

the recipient of a Bill and Melinda Gates Grant called the Technology Leadership Program.

Jeff taught at international schools in the Middle East and Asia.  Moving from a

classroom teacher into technology facilitator roles and administrative positions,

Jeff began sharing his passions for learning via his blog “The Thinking Stick”.

In 2007 he was invited to create an innovative conference focusing on learning

and technology initiating the “Learning 2.0 Conference”.

“EDURO Learning” presented by Jeff Utecht, program highlights:

Jeff is a Cougar...born and raised on a farm in the Spokane Valley.  He has two

brothers, one who is a farmer on an 1800 acre farm and one who is an educator.

Jeff also pursued a career as an educator.  His focus of the presentation was

the effects of Technology around us. 2015 Cyberstats ranked all 50 States pertaining to jobs in the Tech industry.

Washington ranked 9th in Tech employment.  Washington ranked 3rd in

wages in Tech employment.  Jeff showed a video of 2 Tractors working a field with 1 Farmer controlling their

progress.  This demonstrates the increasing use of applied Technology.  The

Farmer then sells his hay on Craig’s List.

“It’s Complicated” by Danah Boyd is a book that addresses the social lives of

networked teens.  Her findings show that teens today have less freedom than

any generation before them.  They can’t just go outside and play due to safety

issues.  They have too much structured time and don’t have time to socialize.

Teens use their devices to communicate with each other.

Jeff showed a slide of a group of teens that were all on their cell phones and

asked us to raise our hands if we saw that as bad.  The majority of the

room had their hands raised.  Then he showed us a slide of a baby on a

mom’s lap video chatting with a grandmother and asked the same question.

No one raised their hand.  His final slide was of three older men who were

on their phones and he asked the question a final time. No one raised

their hand.  Then he asked us to have a table discussion about the mobile

generation and how we see them.

The company that he is a part of is a global organization with his partners in

other countries.  Jeff emphasized that this demonstrates a new global way

of doing things focusing on four C’s:

1.  Collaboration across space and time.

2.  Communication in the way the world communicates, through email and text.

News flash - your grandkids will never write you a letter, they will text you and

Facebok you.

3.  Critical Thinking where people look for problems and solve them by technology.

4.  Creating content to share with the world.  An example is learning through YouTube.

YouTube is the best education website.
