President Kari Petrasek rang the bell at 12:02pm, calling to order meeting #5654 of The Rotary Club of Everett and meeting #3 of her presidency.

 

Kari Quaas presented the thought of the day, reading a thank-you note from a student scholarship recipient.

 

PP Henry Newton introduced his wife, Sandra. Betsy Baker-Bold introduced Kerry Morehouse. Ashley Bolden introduced her daughter, Bailey. Ashley also introduced Sharon Gomez with the Hotel Indigo. Sharon announced the upcoming Women’s Expo on September 20^th.

 

PP Will McMahan joined our club in 2000. He found that the club was connected with all aspects of the community and learned what a difference the club made in the city of Everett. Will encouraged members to ask someone if they are interested in Rotary.

 

PP Henry Newton presented his classification talk. Henry was born in 1937. He married Sandra in 1959. He was president of our club in 1982. Henry retired this year.

 

PP Kelli Thode announced Rotary community coffee hour on Wednesday, August 12^th, 8-9am at Choux Choux Bakery.

 

President Kari reminded the club of the board meeting on Friday, July 24^th, 7:30-8:20am on Zoom. She also stated that dues invoices were sent out this week. Please pay your dues.

 

PP Michael Kvistad auctioned Mariners tickets for the Sunday, September 22^nd game. Henry Janicki had the winning bid at $260.

 

PP Kelli Thode was happy that her son and his family are in town.

 

Betsy Baler Bold celebrated her 17^th wedding anniversary and was back from Orlando.

 

Kari Quaas had $20 for her 13^th wedding anniversary.

 

Ashley Bolden had birthday bucks and was also happy about a trip to the Olympic Game Farm.

PP Will McMahan introduced today’s speaker, Katie Tormohlen, Director of Marketing with the American Cancer Society of Washington. Katie introduced Development Manager, Ginger Painter. They presented a video to the club.

 

The ACS vision is to end cancer for everyone. Their mission is to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.

 

The ACS is the largest cancer fighting organization, in existence for over 110 years. Their approach focuses on discovery, advocacy and patient support. There has been a 34% reduction in cancer death since 1991. 40% of newly diagnosed cancers in US adults are potentially avoidable. 4.5 million lives have been saved since 1991 due to reductions in smoking, advances in treatment and early detection.

 

Fundraising events in Washington State include Relay for Life, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the Glamour Manor auction, and the Golf Classic. Katie and Ginger then took questions from the members.

 

President Kari presented our speakers with a certificate of donation to the Snohomish County Court Appointed Special Advocacy Program.
