Meeting of April 5, 2016 #37 (5146) was gaveled to order by  President, Deborah Wright, Presiding who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance

Thought for the day was handled by Ron Thompson who had thoughts from Ben Franklin.  (Can’t go wrong with Ben Franklin.)

 

Jesse O’Brien introduced visiting Rotarians who included

Steve McGraw from Seattle #4 who  surely had a grand time – will likely  transfer his membership up here.  Also visiting was

Jim Haugen – Past President of  this club.  Jim was attending to pitch the Lake Stevens Rotary Club Drinkathon  --- more of  that below.

Jennifer Rancourt – Public Defender’s Office – gave her classification talk, discussing her representation of indigent individuals in Snohomish County, serving as Judge Pro-Tem in Everett and Marysville District Courts, and also serving on the Governor’s Commission on Clemency.  Welcome to Rotary, Jennifer.

 

Will McMahon talked about the Walk-a-thon ... another of the club’s opportunities for service, and clarified that this is a chance to donate, but also a chance to support the club’s commitment to our Next Generation Project – AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination.)  There is an expectation that every member will participate in some manner.  In addition to financially supporting AVID kids, our club provides an opportunity to  mentor and help young men and women learn some of life lessons - before learning them the hard way. 

Will Introduced Kelly Shepard – Principal  of Sequoia High  School who  again stressed the value that Rotarians can add.  Not only by  donating, but by  helping kids “figure things out.”  She gave an example of Greg Lineberry talking to a young man about law enforcement and introducing him to retired EPD Chief Kathy Attwood, and then Judge Janice Ellis  for a broader understanding of  this avenue of occupational opportunity.  Or as we say in Rotary – share your Avenue of Service.

 

National Holiday today is  National GO FOR BROKE Day – of  course – shared by Jim Stantiford.

 

Happy Bucks were kicked off by

Jeff Mitchell whose $100 rang the bell.  Jeff was both celebrating a birthday, AND his capture of a box seat ticket package for a Seattle Sounders game from Rev Paul Stoot’s auction on behalf of the Greater Trinity Academy. 

More Happy Bucks came from Paul Pitre who enjoyed the opportunity to meet new WSU President  Kirk Schulz who spent time in Everett on Monday.  Dr. Schulz will start in Pullman in June after he finishes the school year at Kansas State University.

And More Happy Bucks came from Pres Deb Wright whose Happy Bucks rang the bell even though she in far, far, far from that many birthdays.

And Even More Happy Bucks came from Rev Paul Stoot who joined Mitchell in enjoying the Sounders game and having a visit from the club’s General Manager.

Yet More Happy Bucks came from Eileen Simmons – chair of the Local Impact Committee.  The  Local Impact Committee recently decided to award up to $5,000/year for up to 3 years to the Recovery Café on Broadway.

And Finally More Happy Bucks came from Mary Toews who was too far away for me to hear. But we are all happy that she is happy.

 

Weekly Drawing winners were Rich Toyer, Michael Kvistad, and Gale Larson.  All three immediately donated some of their winnings to members of the club, so there is no IRS reportable gain.  In fact, all three will be eligible for an In Kind Deduction up to the straight face limit.

 

Worthy Charity of the Week news came from Past President of our club Jim Haugen who was visiting from the Rotary Club of Lake Stevens and announced that information on their annual Wine and Beer Tasting was now available by vising the club’s website - http://www.lakestevensrotary.org/ .  Mark your calendar – event is April 29 from 6-9 PM at the EvCC Jackson Conference Center.  Admission is $35.00  (Jim is one of our Centennial Members – past members of our club who may show up from time to time when they feel overwhelmed by the need for a good meal and fellowship with exemplary Rotarians.)

 

The Program – Boeing at 100 - was Introduced by Past President Larry O’Donnell.  Larry observed that three events of real consequence happened in 1916:  1) Boeing was founded, 2) The Rotary  Club  of Everett was founded, and 3) WSU won  the Rose Bowl-beating Brown University. Go Cougs!

Speakers were Alex Pietsch and

Tim Nowlis.  Pietsch  is the Associate Vice President for Corporate Relations at WSU, and in this  position serves as facilitator and coordinator of educational, research, business and philanthropic partnerships with  private  companies and  their  industries. Nowlis is a former member of our  Rotary Club, and held numerous managerial  positions with Boeing Public Affairs before his retirement in 2012 after 32 years of service.  Tim un-retired to lead the region’s Toast to Boeing which has already kicked off even though the actual  Centennary date is July  15, 2016. 

 

A series of events over the coming year are planned to recognize the role  Boeing  has played and continues  to  play in the economic, social, and political  life of the region.  Activities include the United Way of King County’s Softball game at Safeco Field on May 22 in which non-profits throughout Western Washington will support the Aplause  for Boeing effort.  Dennis Smith is supporting this project in Snohomish County.  Other activities are planned including proclamations throughout  the region, as well as several fun run events.  Good Program!

 

Next Week’s Program will  be “Community Foundation of Snohomish County” presented by Maddy Metzger-Utt  and Karri Matau.
