September 27, 2016: log of meeting #13 (5171) was called to order by President, Ed Petersen
who then led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Visitors and Rotarians were introduced by Russ Hermes: Will Rice from the Bellingham Club, Diana Juarez from the Yakima Club also the guest of Dennis Smith; and visitors PP Larry Hanson; Michele Beito from Anthony’s Woodfire Grill, guest of Dick Schlosser; Tom Kozaczynski from Compass Health, guest of Rich Anderson; and Donna Hunter and Stephen Anson guests of Janice Ellis.
Past President Dick Hanson Past President in 1992-93 provided interesting facts about his term as president. He told us that in 1943 the club provided 2 scholarships of $100 each and during his term they provided $50,000. (Point of interest, according to President Ed, this year we will provide $188,000 in scholarships.) PP Dick (Larry Hanson’s brother) provided the thought for the day, “Believe in what you do and do what you believe in.”
Club Meeting Sponsor for the Day was Josh O’Connor from The Daily Herald. He said that the Herald is the source of information in and about this community, available in paper form and online. He called for a vote and passed out ballots which he will tally and report out on 11/9.
Michael Kvistad gave his classification talk. He is an attorney with Anderson Hunter, married with two daughters, lives in Edmonds. His wife is a Public Defender. He shared some cute photos of his daughters in various poses and meltdowns. He left us a couple of articles he wrote on changes in credit card surcharges and the signing of documents.
Steve McGraw gave his classification talk as well. He spoke of two loves in his life. The first was after he arrived here from NY and took a ferry on Puget Sound and fell in love with Washington. The second was when he fell for his wife. They now have two daughters and he works for Senior Services of Snohomish County. He’s been in Rotary for 18 years and is happy to be providing services to the community in his job and as a Rotarian. He wants us to remember that there are 142,000 people over 60 in our county and to expect 300,000 and the needs they will have.
Announcements included that the Fireside is tomorrow at Café Works so if you were not in attendance you’ve missed this reminder; Larry O reminded us that Bill Dobler wants visitors with chocolate chip cookies and then passed out flyers telling us about the Centennial Programs which include the Founders Day Luncheon on Dec 13, 11:30am to 1:00pm and the Centennial Celebration Dinner on March 1, 2017, 5:30 – 9:30 pm.
Sad announcements include a card for George Petrie & Family (Wife, Thelma passed); Eric Lucas lost his sister this past week and Eric Anderson lost his father.
Happy Bucks/Birthday Bucks started off with Dick Hanson for $100 in celebration of the centennial and being able to reminisce about his presidency; Dennis was happy about their new staff, Diana introduced earlier, and the Day of Caring when volunteers planted the planters on Colby and provided 2220 hours of community service; Will provided 68 birthday bucks; Lyle celebrated birthday and anniversary which totaled 95 which he rounded to $100; Kaye celebrated her 66th birthday, her husband completing radiation for cancer, a bull dog puppy and a move to Arlington; Judi mourned the loss of friends in the Cascade Mall shooting; Judge George ended with a little joke.
Raffle included wine, Griffey posters, tablecloths, popcorn, and went to Ted, Rose and someone I couldn’t see.
Glen Bachman introduced the program presented by Lisa Lefeber from the Port of Everett
after listing her considerable qualifications and responsibilities, among them the manage-
ment of state and federal affairs and the affairs of the city as well.
She told us of $25.7 billion in exports specific to our port. She said that the three major goals
for the purpose of balancing the working waterfront with the recreational waterfront are:
Modernization of the seaport
Creation of the seaport community
Cleaning up of historic pollution
The seaport community will include restaurants and housing, hotel, a 1-acre plaza, and the
Grand Avenue Bridge Park.
Lisa showed us a video of the moving of the Weyerhaeuser bui9lding on July 13, 9/10th of a mile
South of its previous location by the Nickle Brothers. It will become the centerpiece for the
Boxcar Park.
Lisa answered the question about the Kimberly Clark status by saying that the Port is still
trying to acquire the property and deal with the hazardous waste issues.
President Ed thanked Lisa for her presentation by making a donation to our Dominican
Republic Gardening Project. He announced the next program as “Red Cross at 100”
presented by Chuck Morrison introduced by Will McMahan. He reminded us of service to the
community
