After being greeted at the door by Jeff Cornish and Joe Claeys, the rotary Club of Everett meeting on December 5, 2017, was called to order on time as usual by President, Will McMahan.
The Thought of The Day was brought by Dr. Mark Valentine, who commented that unfortunately we hear people stating that, if a person does not agree with them, then they must be a moron or an idiot. Mark pointed out that none of us are perfect and that we need to be tolerant of other persons' opinions. He quoted Bill Nye, who said, "Everyone you meet knows something you don't know." Mark completed the Thought by emphasizing that it is important that we respect knowledge and other persons' opinions.
Introduction of Guests. There were no visiting Rotarians for Gail Larson to introduce. Lyle Ryan introduced Erica Weir, who is the General Manager of the Everett Performing Arts Center. Tara Eckstrom introduced her husband and business partner, Grant.
Announcements.
1. President-Elect, Amy Norman, once again announced that the nominees for office during the next fiscal year are:
For the Board of Directors: Jim Staniford, Deane Minor, Glen Bachman, and Tina Gilson
For Treasurer: Rich Toyer
For Secretary: Neil Angst
For President Nominee: Todd Morrow
The President called for a vote in favor of the candidates, which was unanimous, which is not surprising since he did not ask for any "no" votes. The final vote will be next week on December 12.
2. President Will asked that we place our yearly tips for the catering golf course staff in the containers that were on each table.
3. President Will once again asked the membership to consider using the golf course catering people to provide refreshments for holiday parties or other events.
4. President Will also announced that the Navy Band will present their annual concert next Monday, December 11, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center in Downtown Everett.
5. Lyle Ryan indicated that, since there was no meeting this month on the 4th Tuesday, the free lunch for potential members would instead be on Tuesday, December 19.
6. Judge Dingledy reported that the ice cream social was fantastic with a great speaker and a wonderful turnout.
Happy Dollars/Birthday Bucks/Raffle. Jim Staniford was happy that a new cook that he hired actually showed up, after two that he hired did not show up. Judge Okrent was celebrating his 62nd birthday. Judi Edwards gave $200 to announce that her niece was fighting in Edmonds on December 23 and that she and her husband were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Michael Hawks contributed $14, which I believe must have been the weight of his new grandson. Steve Juntwait somewhat reluctantly gave $100 since his wife Nancy's picture was in the paper. Lyle Ryan was happy to announce that his unborn grandchild was going to be a granddaughter. Mary Toews pointed out that today was the last day to buy raffle tickets to win theater tickets. Howie Bargreen was happy that the Bargreen Coffee shop on Rucker was voted the best coffee shop. Wick Temple was happy with the UW Apple Cup win. The Raffle was won by Judge Okrent, Tom Koenig, and Larry O'Donnell.
Program. Russ Kimble, Chairman of the Local Impact Committee, said that the Committee was looking for leading edge organizations to create change and that one of those organizations was the Recovery Café. He introduced the speaker for the day, Wendy Grove, the CEO of Recovery Café, located at 2212 Broadway, Everett. Wendy graduated from the UW and was a school teacher in the Snohomish District before she started the Recovery Café. The mission of the café is to provide a safe place for men and women to define and pursue healing and recovery together. The core of the program lies in the effective strategy of peers supporting peers in recovery from life's challenges. To participate in the program you must be a member which is free, be liquor free for at least 24 hours, agree to attend a weekly support group, and agree to help cook, clean, et cetera, in the café. After explaining the program, Wendy thanked The Rotary Club of Everett for providing a multi-year grant through the Local Impact Committee providing help in the café's strategic planning and help in obtaining a $5,000 grant from District 5050. Ms Grove also thanked Tara and Grant Eckstrom for providing to the café services and equipment having a value of $7,000. The speaker answered questions from Lyle Ryan, Howie Bargreen, and Julie Herber.
At the end of the meeting President Will read a letter from an AVID student thanking The Club for providing funding so that she could afford to visit several universities in deciding where to attend next year. Tom Koenig was very happy that her favorite was Washington State University in Pullman.
