After being greeted by Mary Toews, the meeting of August 11, 2015 (#7 (5115) was called to order by President Deborah Wright.  President Deb then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

Zak Parpia found someone to read the Thought for the Day but I couldn’t see who it was.  Dave Schlosser

Jeff Cornish introduced our guest Krista, who is working on Tiz’s campaign and there were no visiting Rotarians today.

 

Announcements followed:

 

 

Don Gerould (pronounced “Gerald”) gave his classification talk.  He told us of several moves and job changes then assured us that he has settled in our area as the new owner of Berry Sign.

2.    Tammy Dunn told us that a good time was had at the Golfun.

3.    Youth Exchange Committee – Sally Lancaster via Judi Edwards told us that 3 host families are needed for next year.

4.    Eileen Simmons gave us the details for the VOA volunteer project on August 30^th.  We are able to be there for as long as we can between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm.

5.    We are asked to sign the card for Linda Mackey who has 4^th Stage Lung Cancer

6.    Judi told us about the El Paraiso Social, 8/13 5pm only 3 spots left – I think she also subbed for one of the above and reminded us that she wouldn’t be here next week to pick up the slack.  Have a nice break Judi!

7.    We were asked to register online for the BBQ at Forest Park on Sept 13^th. 10 am to

5 pm and asked for help with children’s games.

 

President Deborah read a letter from RI President celebrating August 11 as one full year without a single case of polio in Africa.  We were charged to keep the battle front and center.

 

President Deborah then read a very nice thank you note from scholarship recipient Dorothy Harris.

 

Happy Dollars/Birthday Bucks/Raffle:  Glen Bachman started off with telling us he had been on the USS Boxer (LHD-4) and went on to tell us of a problem with his brakes which he ended up repairing himself with the aid of a tool kit given him by Marc Baker! Zak celebrated his 38^th wedding anniversary; Tiz announced that 15 people were going to Spada Lake on August 21^st; Tammy is moving to Mill Creek and had a garage sale;

Andy is back from Norway, is 63 years old and married for 37 years—worth $100 and it even adds up! 

Sonja enjoyed 11 days and 3,000 miles to Sturgis planned by Marc Baker; Jeff Cornish provided a Mulligan’s apology for poor judgment when nearly hitting Lyle Ryan with a ball at Golfun; Steve served 1200 hot dogs at Night Out Against Crime;

Dale lost another 5 pounds; and Shannon has accepted an ED position in Texas so she’s leaving in October.

 

President Deb credited Shannon’s administration of our Animal Control for making it the best in the region.

 

Raffle:  $20 Gift Certificates in honor of National S’mores Day given by Jim Staniford which included marshmallows, graham crackers and a recipe for a special drink went to Henry, Rose and Tom.

 

Katrina Koontz introduced Tom Clendening who presented “KSER – Your Public Radio.” 

Tom began

by saluting Rotary for all it does for the community.  He talked about the larger corporate ownership

of large numbers of radio stations versus the small few local stations.  He advocated for the voices

which cannot be heard without the independent station.  KSER has been owned by the community

for over 25 years.  Its programs are produced by a very small staff and many volunteers.  (Michelle

Valentine, wife of Past President Dr. Mark Valentine, is one of those volunteers who currently

manages the monthly show on behalf of the League of Women Voters.)

 

Pledge drives provide 70% of the funding for the station.  Underwriting announcements provide

earned income at $25 for a one time announcement which is tax deductible.  There is a 50% discount

for non profit announcements.

 

There are 1,400 members (Membership is $35 each) and there are approximately 20,000 listeners.

President Deborah thanked our speaker and presented him with a certificate indicating a donation in his name to the Dispute Resolution Center with the intent of creating peace at home.  She thanked visitors and members for their contributions and recited the following announcements.
