Meeting of The Rotary Club of Everett called to order by President Deborah Wright.

The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and the Thought of the Day was read by Judge Eric Lucas.  President Deborah Wright lead us in the song “The more we get together the

happier we will be”.

Announcements:

 

Will McMahan called up Mark Nesse and presented him with Will’s new book

“Crossing America Bicycling through the Heartland”.  The book highlights

Will’s solar bike trip and Mark connected with Will’s book.

 

Classification Talk by Rod Moody.  He joined Rotary in Ferndale in 1992,

transferred to Kirkland in 1997, and was a member of Everett Rotary from 2007-2008.  Recently rejoining Everett Rotary, he practices Civil Rights Law in downtown Everett.  He participates in Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Campfire USA, and another organization in Whatcom County.

 

Lyle Ryan thanks us for actively seeking new members.  The  three classifications that we are highlighting this week are  Auto Towing, Collection Services, and Dentistry Oral Surgery.

 

Marybeth Dingledy announced that one more host is needed in Everett or Mukilteo

for “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” being held Friday, November 13th.

 

Eileen Simmons invited Rotarians to volunteer for the VOA Food Band on October 29th

from 11 am to 1 pm.  Volunteers do not have to stay the whole time.

 

President Deborah announced that if 7 Rotarians attend an event they can receive credit

for a Make-up as long as one person brings a list of the Rotarian attendees to Judi.

She also said that now is the time to start making payment plans for the next fundraiser

by talking with Judi.

 

Happy Dollars/Birthday Bucks:

 

Joe Gaffney, as President of the Boys & Girls Club, informed us that 650 people attended

their recent fundraiser, beating goals for dollars raised.  After the event, being held at

Tulalip, he won $100 at the Casino and after other expenses he donated the balance of

his winnings.

 

Joe Claeys donated $100 in honor of his years of Rotary, years of Banking, and his Birthday.

 

Kaye Phinney gave $65 Happy Birthday Dollars.  

 

Sonya Kraski gave Happy Bucks (unable to hear the occasion, sorry).

 

Rich Toyer Happy/Sad Dollars in honor of being in Mazatlan when Guess Who’s

Coming to Dinner is happening (Happy) and not being able to attend Guess Who’s

Coming to Dinner (Sad).

 

Ed Peterson gave $28 Happy Dollars for the number of years since the founding of

Housing Hope and couple more bucks honoring the 5 Rotarians that attended

the recent Rotary Leadership Training.

 

Marc Baker gave donated Happy Bucks   in honor of Betsy kite surfing with her

husband in South Africa.

 

Paul Stoot donated Happy Bucks announcing the Keynote Speaker for the upcoming

Greater Trinity fundraiser will be Dr. Yolanda Watson Spiva, the CEO of the College Success Foundation.

 

Andrea Sekoria gave Happy Bucks in honor of the privilege of attending the recent

Rotary Leadership Training.  She shared a suggestion from the New Member

Engagement and Retention Seminar that each person speaking should repeat their name

and classification.  A great way for new members to get to know the names of fellow

Rotarians.

Paul Pitre donated Happy Bucks celebrating the WSU groundbreaking and a thank you to the Herald for their coverage of the event.

Raffle:

 

This was Shannon’s last Everett Rotary meeting before she heads to Texas for

a new job.  She hopes to join Rotary in Texas.  She conducted the Raffle.

Winners were Bob Biel, Judi, and a guest of one of the Rotarians. Raffle prizes

included Wine, Tickets to the Silvertips, Cookies, and Candy.

Also, Dave Surface won a gift certificate to a new Mexican restaurant.

 

Program - Everett Silvertips

 

Jim Staniford introduced Garry Davidson, General Manager of the Everett

Silvertips. 

 

Garry Davidson has brought an extensive hockey background with him to Everett

when he was named General Manager of the Silvertips in February 2012.  In a

career spanning more than three decades, Garry has been an Owner, General

Manager, Head Coach, and Player Personnel Director in the junior and professional

ranks in both North America and Europe.

 

Originally from the town of Souris, Manitoba, Davidson’s coaching career began in the

Manitoba Junior Hockey League in 1978.  He then spent eight seasons coaching overseas, where he won an Austrian league championship in 1984 and also spent time in Switzerland and Italy.  He returned to North America in 1990 to coach Junior-A in Penticton and was an Assistant Coach for Team Canada’s gold medal-winning entry at the 1995 Spengler Cup.

 

From 2001 to 2008, Gary ran the BCHL’s Salmon Arm Silverbacks as Owner, General Manager, and Head Coach.  A three-time BCHL Coach of the Year, his other

coaching stops in the league include Penticton, Nanaimo, Victoria and Trail.  He also

oversaw all player recruiting with each of his BCHL clubs, helping produce three eventual Hobey Baker Award winners (Paul Kariya, Brendan Morrison, and Ryan Duncan) and three first-round NHL draft picks (Travis Zajac, Kris Chucko, and Riley Nash) with Salmon Arm.

 

Before taking the reins in Everett, Davidson, 64, spent four seasons, 2008 to 2011, as Director of Player Personnel for the Portland Winterhawks.  In that role he was instrumental in the acquisition of players via the Bantam Draft and in the scouting of listed players that helped the Winterhawks become one of the “WHL’s top perennial contenders”.

 

Since taking over the Silvertips, Garr has presided over a building process leading the franchise to significant strides on the ice and stocking the club’s system with exciting young players and NHL prospects.  He secured the return of head coach Kevin Constatine to Everett in the summer of 2013 and constructed a Roster that has achieved

two of the most successful seasons in franchise history of late, including the team’s fourth US Division title in 2014-2015.

 

Gary and his wife, Brenda, have two sons:  Ty, head coach of the Sicamous Eagles in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League and Clay, a mixed martial artist residing in Penticton, B.C.

 

 

 

 

 

The Everett Silvertips are an American major junior ice hockey team currently

members of the U.S. Division in the Western Conference of the Western Hockey

League (WHL).  The Silvertips joined the WHL as an expansion team for the 2003-2004 season.  The average age of the players are 16 to 20 years old.  All players attend Everett High School or take online courses.  They are considered amateur hockey players. 

 

The goal of the players is to develop skills to become professional hockey players.  An added benefit to being a team member is participation in an Educational Scholarship Program which grants a player one year of college tuition and books for each year they play.  This last year, two of the three 20 year olds that graduated from the Everett Silvertips went on to college and one went on to sign with the NHL.  The team is only allowed to have three 20 year olds at a time.  Currently they have a solid Protected List

which includes 15 year olds.  Team members come from a variety of countries.  On their

current Roster they are carrying 26 players, including three goaltenders. A question was raised from the audience regarding fighting on the ice, which seems to be part of Hockey’s appeal.  Fighting does happen but it is not encouraged.

 

The Silvertips are underway with their 13th season in the Western Hockey League and will open their home schedule at XFINITY Arena, 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10 against the Spokane Chiefs for "Fill the House" Night presented by BECU.
