Rotary Log 3.6.18
THE ROTARY CLUB OF EVERETT Everett Rotary’s March 6, 2018 Meeting #34 (5242) commenced at 12:08 PM at Legion Memorial Golf Club Our Greeters were: Katarina Koontz and Amy Norman Vice President George Bowden Presided in Will McMahan’s absence.
Judge Bowden led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Sean Kelly shared recent speaker events, like one at Lewis and Clark College, where the speaker was shut down by protests and other ethos. He compared the actions of the protesters to the Rotary 4-Way test. Katrina Koontz introduced Visiting Rotarians – we had none. She introduced the following Guests: Rick Smith, a guest of Greg Tisdel Maki Perry, a guest of Kaye Phinney

Announcements: Steve Miller announced that Kari Petracek is the Grand Prize winner in the Annual Fundraiser. To date, $64,370.60 has been raised.

Re-Classification Talk – Amy Norman – to be continued Joe Gaffney was to provide a Happy Hour Update. Joe was not present but Scott Casselman said it was a nice social event. Erik Samuelson shared that Rotaract is meeting twice per month.
The group is planning a Rotaract Road Trip. Judi Edwards reported that we still have time to take the catering survey. She is also looking for volunteers for the March 22 Food Bank assistance group. Happy Dollars/Birthday Bucks/Raffle: Larry O’Donnell presented a Birthday Bucks check from Rich Anderson in honor of Mark Nesse’s upcoming birthday. Gale Larson asked for AVID and Sequoia mentor/speaker volunteers. AVID will be on April 27 in the morning, and Sequoia on April 26 from 10:30 – 11:30 AM. Greg Tisdel asked that we support the 115 year-old Boy Scout Troop No. 1 in Everett, as its membership is dangerously low to sustain itself. Deane Minor thanked Steve Ellis for helping out, which allowed Deane to bring his father to Rotary recently. Gary Cohn celebrated the levy passage, and the Naval Jr. ROTC’s recent win. Tom Lane presented $100.00 to share the Hospital Foundation’s recent event, which honored his father and mother. The Raffle winners were Tom Koenig, Betsy Baker-Bold, and Henry Newton.

Program: Sean Kelly introduced Randy Shelton, who presented “Salmon For Soldiers.” Mr. Shelton served in the Armed Forces, and shared that the hardest part was coming home. He decided to help others overcome this barrier by inviting returning Veterans to share in one simple event: fishing. He started in January, 2013 with what he thought would be a one-year event. From there the program swelled to 113 Veterans/over 500 people total, who participated last year. Up to 150 boats go out in one day. The next event is September 15th at the Port of Everett. VP Bowden thanked all the contributors and guests. He then announced that the next program would be “Snohomish Co. Hiking Adventures,” presented by Marybeth Dingledy, and introduced by Sean Kelly

He also mentioned the next Meeting Announcements and Makeup Opportunities: 1. Rotaract Charter Celebration, March 16th at Edmonds Community College, 6:30pm 2. VOA Food Bank Volunteering, March 22nd, 11am-1:00pm 3. Rotary Board Mtg, March 30th, 3rd Flr Chapel at Bethany on Pacific 4.
