THE ROTARY CLUB OF EVERETT meeting on February 20, 2018, was called to order and led in the Pledge of Allegiance at 12:05 by President Will McMahan. (We were greeted at the door by Greeters Cindy Larsen and Tony Orso.) The Thought of the Day came to us by Joe Claeys who spoke of “How to Stay Young” tips including throwout the numbers, let the doctors worry about it, keep learning, enjoy the simple things, laugh long and often, and tell people you love them often. Introduction of Visiting Rotarians Tony Orso.
We had no visiting Rotarians. Guests included Hugh Minor, Dean Minor’s father and former Rotarian and Casey Shane of All Kleen, and Ian Sauer of Electronic Business, introduced by Dave Schlosser. Announcements: • Paul Harris Presentations by Maddy Metzger-Utt.
 
The following individuals receive Paul Harris Awards: a. First - Nick Hansen and Andrea Skoria b. Second - Hugh Minor c. Multiple - Eric Anderson, Tammy Dunn, Chuck MacAulay, Jerry Tucker (6th) and Dale Newman (7th) • RYLA - Nick Hansen stated that RYLA will be May 24-27 and have two spots open.
• Rotaract Chartering Celebration • Food Bank Volunteering - Judi Edwards reported that five people had signed up for Thursday, February 22nd, 11 am - 1 pm. • Silvertips Fellowship benefiting Dawson Place - Jim Stanford reported tickets are still available for the February 25th game.
• Youth Exchange - Janice Ellis announced that we are having a rummage sale in the May timeframe so clean out your storage and donate items, volunteer and help raise $5,000 - $8,000 for your outbound Rotary Exchange Student. • Rotary Foundation Month - Steve Miller drew Maddy Metzger-Utt as the winner of the YMCA of Snohomish County drawing. There is one more week to donate and for us to reach our goal of $60,000.
 
 
Happy Dollars/Birthday Bucks/Raffle: • Tony Orso “rang the bell” with $100 for 60th birthday and 19th anniversary • Dean Minor - Happy with $93 for Dad’s Birthday • Larry O’Donnell - “rang the bell” with article about presidential visits like Harry Truman (70 years ago) • Raffle Winners - Larry O’Donnell - Wine/candy; Ed Rubitino - candy/lunch/wine, Jim Hayes - cookies/bourbon whiskey
 
 
Program Introduction by Rose Goulet: Everett Rowing Association presented by Padraic McGovern, Everett Rowing Association Executive Director Program:
Padraic McGovern stated the Everett Rowing Association rows in the Snohomish River at the mouth of the river and rowers consists of middle school and high school students, and adults.
There are about 100 youth rowers and some adult rowers row competitively. Rowing is accessible to the youth as any youth can participate. Many of the rowers, youth and adult, participate in regattas throughout the Pacific Northwest as well as USRowing Regionals and USRowing Nationals.
 
Opportunities: · Row at University of Washington Crew – best program in the country · College Scholarships – women programs six colleges Louisville, Portland, Sacramento State, Old Dominion University, US Naval Academy, Washington Why Rowing? · Being on a team – brings out the best of us · Row for the Cure Seattle – community that supports a cause · Family – families do together – row together pass on through family · Health – very healthy activity; Mission of the Everett Rowing Association is to provide high quality opportunities for athletes of all ages and skill levels.
 
Thirty three percent of the budget is from fundraising. Additionally, the revenues is through users, alumni and community members. Moving Forward · Relationship with YMCA · Everett School District PE unit into school system · Snohomish County High School – draw from 30 schools in Snohomish County Issues in Youth Sports · Declining Participation o Overloaded student-athletes o Sports specificity = exclusivity o Advanced athleteic experiences at a young age o Lack of interest Active in resolving these issues as it changes kids/adults lives Everett Rowing Association
