ROTARY CLUB OF EVERETT
 

The in-person attendance was “clown car full”, pushing upwards to 50 attendees.  I counted 6 attending on ZOOM.

 

Parents, aunts, uncles, and students of the month were being seated at the tall tables in the back of the room as the Rotarians and their guests found or didn’t find seating towards the front of the space.  Latecomers enjoyed the show as standing room only became the norm.  President Michael Kvistad had three songs that were played prior to the meeting, “When will my life begin”, “I’m so blessed”, and “Yes”.  It turned out that President Michael had reached out to the three students of the month last week and asked them what their favorite song was, and these are the three tunes we heard during the warmup to the start of the meeting.

 

President Michael Kvistad opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and at the conclusion our 16^th meeting of the year began and the 5,566^th meeting of the Rotary Club of Everett was underway.

 

Ryan Willis reminded us that on this date in 1989, “The Great One”, Wayne Gretzky, scored his 1,851^st point to break Gordie Howe’s and the NHL’s career points record.

 

 

 

Past President Bob Bavasi provided a tribute to Reid Hale a former member of our Rotary Club who passed away recently at the age of 93.  Reid was born in Yakima and at an early age his family moved to the West side.  Reid graduated from Lake Washington High School and the University of Washington where he majored in journalism.  After serving in the Air Force during the Korean conflict Reid worked as a writer for the Seattle PI and for various community newspapers after that. Reid was a Seattle Mariners fan and was a 50-year member of the Rotary Club of Everett.  We honored Reid with a moment of silence.

Rotary Members - People in Action

Polio Month - Ezra Teshome, a Seattle based Rotarian, was on the cover of Time Magazine who honored him for his work in helping eradicate Polio in his homeland of Ethiopia.  Ezra has continued to lead groups of Rotarians on a yearly basis to inoculate children.  One of those Rotarians was Past President Deb Wright.

 

Movember - Movember is an annual event involving the growing of mustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide. President Michael will donate $100.00 (to a maximum of $1,000.00) at the end of November for each mustache grown or if you already have a full beard, you’ll need to shave that beard off and leave the mustache.

Jerry Tucker was “bell ringer happy” ($100.00) for his 6-0 Oregon Ducks and their recent win over the Ohio State.

 

Paul Stoot gave $25.00 to announce the November 1^st Gala that helps support his school, Rise Up Academy, in South Everett.

 

Past President Deb Wright gave $5.00 for the great memories she has from the time she joined the Polio inoculation trip to Ethiopia.

 

Krissy Davis gave $50.00 Birthday bucks.

 

Winner number 1 - Marybeth Dingledy selected the various “spreads”.

 

Winner number 2 - Past President Larry O’Donnell selected the wine and chocolate bar.

 

Winner number 3 - Past President Henty Newton’s prize was a Rotary hat and chocolates.

 

Krissy Davis was the Paul Harris winner for the quarter and will receive a “next level” Paul Harris.

 

Cascade High School: Student - Austyn Davis; Counselors - Jason Himstedt and Anne Jensen

 

Austyn was joined here today by her father, stepmother, baby stepsister Nolla, and her mother.  

 

Austyn loves music, she plays the saxophone(s), when her counselor said she plays the alto, tenor, and the baritone saxophones I thought she played all the saxophone types there were.  Was I ever wrong there are at least ten more types of saxophones.  She is also a Cascade High basketball player, member of the honor society and carries a 4.0 grade point average.  On top of this she has a job and shares her family time with a big sister and two brothers.

 

Everett High School: Student - Deborah Vasuilakeba; Counselor - Jen Selders

 

Deborah’s supporters today were her parents, aunt and uncle.

 

Deborah is on the home coming court (Homecoming is Friday night).  She leads with love, she shows up for all events, is the ASB President and the Pacific Islanders Club President.  She is on the volleyball team and has been an AVID student since middle school.  She would like to earn a degree in education.

 

Sequoia High School: Student - Gavin Bryson; Counselor - Tricia Schultz

 

Gavin was accompanied by his parents.

 

Gavin excels in the classroom and is well like by his classmates. Music is his passion; he plays the guitar and the drums. In the future he would like to get into Audio Engineering (producing sound) as his vocation.  He thanked us for this luncheon recognition.

There are eight active members of the Rotaract Club of Snohomish County which is open to anyone over the age of eighteen and would like to learn about leadership, service above self, giving back to local and world communities, etc.

 

This club supports all Snohomish County Rotary    Clubs and their projects.
