THE ROTARY CLUB OF EVERETT
The meeting of August 13, 2019 #7 (5313) was called to order President, Steve Miller who then led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Deane Minor provided the Thought of the Day.
Kelli Thode introduced Visiting Rotarians & Guests which included Janice Ellis’s guests Kelsey Robinson and Melissa Diaz, and Myra Villa; Rich Toyer’s wife of nine months, Karen; Sonya Laurence Green, Anna Marie’s sister-in-law; Jennifer Wenzel from Child Strive, guest of Laura Zorick; and Jeremy Peck, guest of Tom Kozacynski from Compass Health.
Opening Song was sung by our own “Doris Day” (Deborah Wright), Que Sera, Sera, joined on the chorus by the membership.
Meeting Sponsor today was Tom Kozacynski from Compass Health who advised us that they serve 6,000 kids with mental health issues via a camp structure and that Jeremy Peck was here to answer questions on their Building Communities of Hope Gala on September 28th. Bill Bernat will be their speaker for the event.
Announcements:
Steve Miller started off by announcing:
- There are cards for Barb George whose family’s health issues had significantly improved and Andrea Sekora whose husband and mom were receiving cancer treatments.
- Volunteers for Special Olympics are needed at Battle Creek Golf Course this weekend, contact Steve
- The lastly, he read a thank you note from Judd for his RYLA experience.
- Rotary Happy Hour August 22nd – Sean George
- Membership Committee – Roy Yates noted that the focus on membership belonged to all of us—in other words, bring a guest.
- District RLI, November 2nd in Surrey/March 7 & 8 Mt. Vernon – Judi Edwards
- Volunteer food bank on 8.22, 11 am - Judi Edwards
- HOPE Mentoring, August 22nd EHS 12:30pm and volunteering at the food bank same day – Judi Edwards
- Dick Schlosser will pay Rotary $10 for each greeter who signs up today– Judi Edwards
Happy Dollars/Birthday Bucks included:
- Rich Toyer in not that old but $100 anyway;
- Larry O’Donnell told us that it had been 74 yrs since end of WWII and this occurred when he was 8, also worth $100;
- Brian Hollingworth says that this is the first meeting that Steve was not sporting an injury and vote for Brian;
- Steve McGraw talked about the Rotary Strategic Planning event;
- Tammy Dunn talked about the Hall of Fame banquet special wall mural;
- Steve Ellis talked about the Night Out Against Crime;
- Kesley told us to watch for new holes on the golf course;
- Steve Miller gave us $100 to tell us about winning the gold for “best overall” when he didn’t expect.

Janice Ellis introduced Melissa Diaz to speak about “My Exchange Experience in South Korea.
Melissa told us about going to South Korea from Cascade High and that one of the most interesting places she visited was the military base because she liked the history; she went dirt biking; and took bus trips. She told about her host families, students from other countries, her Mexican friend, and how he Korean youth were very competitive, had fewer extracurricular interests and hobbies. Her visit improved her language skills.
President Steve thanked the visitors, the $100 donors and adjourned the meeting a bit early.
