THE LOG of THE ROTARY CLUB OF EVERETT

We were greeted with big smiles and handshakes from Russ Hermes and Deane Minor. Meeting of January 5, 2016 #25 (5133) was called to order around 12:08 pm by President, Deborah Wright followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Thought of the Day with Elizabeth Johnson was a series of thoughtful quotes from Prince Phillip and Garrison Ford

Introduction of Guests by Greg Tisdel included Courteney Hooks (our Rotary Youth Exchange candidate, guest of Sally Lancaster) and Mike McGinnis from the Everett Boys and Girls Club (Guest of Kathy Webber)

Paul Harris Presentations by Past President Tom Koenig to Neil Angst #1, Bill Dobler #9, Steve Juntwait #9, Roy Yates #9, Gary Meissner #4, Jim Staniford #8, Deborah Wright #7, Denny Austin #4. Way to go Rotarians!
RYLA update by Mike Hawks included many interested candidates in YAIL and RYLA, but we still need to be working on recruiting since “interest” doesn’t always mean they apply. RYLA is in May for 18-30 year olds. Look for good folks to send!
Shelley Smith reported on Membership and the need to keep your eyes open for new members.
EGM Volunteering Update : Judi Edwards reported that there were 17 people who attended the Christmas Day volunteering event.

Happy Bucks: Happy folks today included Roy Yates (EGM volunteering with his grandkids), Mark Valentine (WVU Cactus Bowl win over ASU), Maddy Metzger-Utt (tickets to EHS Auction and dinner), Randy Hansen (son was a past RYLA participant and said when he got home that he had “grown as a human being” because of it), Tom Koenig (Rotary Investment Cmte Meeting), Marc Baker (past exchange student Daniel returning to the area in July), Jerry Tucker (UO Ducks for showing up for one half of the bowl game), Larry O’Donnell/Clayton Browse

Tammy Dunn introduced our program speaker, Katherine Nelson who presented her Program: “RI Education” who inspired us with her talk about her Road to Rotary and the Rotary Foundation programs for youth and the extraordinary opportunities they provide to youth around the world. She highlighted programs including RYLA (18-30 year olds), Interact (high school Rotary clubs-did you know the first Interact club was in Florida and the second was in India?), Youth Exchange (high school age), Rotaract (college level Rotary in Action 18-30 year olds) and Ambassadorial Scholorships (graduate level awards for $30k/year with 6 areas of potential focus). Katherine has spoken at many clubs and was very impressed with the number of Paul Harris Fellows our club has as members. (She had all PH fellows stand, and of course, Marc Baker and Tom Rainville were the last two standing with 20 and 28 PH Fellows respectively!)

Katherine was raised in a Rotary family, being inspired by her grandfather’s participation in Rotary’s efforts for polio, having been a polio patient himself. She was a youth exchange student to Austria and shared her experiences with us arriving in a foreign speaking country, but eventually bringing a little Texas to them! When her grandfather was dying of complications from post-polio, his last words to her was that she could now apply for the Global Grand/Ambassadorial Scholorship, since she would not be a Rotary family member after he passed. She did, and she was awarded the scholarship taking her to the UK to study.

Katherine’s talk was a great highlight of all the wonderful things that our PH dollars do for youth and creating cultural understanding and growing peace around the world.
