Everett Rotary Meeting - August 30^th, 2016

We were welcomed by today’s greeters Jessica Mitchell and Tom Koenig. President Ed opened meeting # 5167 at 12:10 PM, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Jessica Mitchell then introduced:

Presidential Recollection

Mark Nesse reflected on his year (1988-89) as president. Ronald Reagan was our President, Booth Gardner our Governor, Bob Drewel our County Executive, and Pete Kinch our Mayor. We had about 250 members and met at The Everett Pacific Hotel (now Holiday Inn). Highlights of the year were Air Fair Parking, a Rotary Trail project, and moving all books out of and back into the library for remodeling.

Judi Edwards announced a day of caring for Everett’s downtown planters on 9/23 from 8-11AM.

Janice Ellis talked about an India Exchange opportunity with some of our Canadian clubs.

President Ed had kudos for Mark Valentine being able to close out a grant and Andrea Sekora for the Mill Creek club’s career speakers program.

Program

“Community Streets Initiative”

Cities are becoming connected to the issues of homelessness, addiction, and mental illness. These are complex issues that will require those involved to break down problems and identify barriers in order to resolve.

The first phase is to create a task force to identify the specific issues, develop short and long term plans, and present a report to the city. The mayor then launches the city’s Safe Streets Plan.

Success will require:

Outreach and enforcement from the police department.
Encouraging addicts to seek recovery through detox and treatment.
Provide police officers with formal crisis intervention training.
Work in lieu of criminal charges and referrals for addiction.
Low barrier housing
The expected result should be:

Decrease in EMT calls
Decrease in arrests
Decrease in jail time
