Rotary Club of Everett
MEETING:
President Neil Angst led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and into our 47th meeting of the year and the 5,550th meeting of the Rotary Club of Everett.
INTRODUCTION OF VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS:
We had three Arlington Rotary Club members in attendance today. Bill Kmet, George Bowden and Joan. They were selling Duck Dash Tickets which is a fundraiser for the club.
President Neil stated the Rotary Board of Directors meeting is Friday, June 28th at 7:30 am at his office. All Rotarians are welcome!
Heather Barnhart stated the Everett Rotary and the Everett Elks Blood Drive needs volunteers between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm on June 28th to help sign people in.
President Neil told us that the Changing of the Guard will be held on July 2nd. Cost of lunch is $20 for this day.
HAPPY DOLLARS AND BIRTHDAY BUCKS:
Steve Miller gave an update on his knee surgery. He waterskied in 30 days of surgery. He also encouraged everyone to come to the Rotary After Hours.
Heather Barnhart had early Happy Birthday Bucks. Her birthday is on Saturday, June 29th.
Jim Staniford gave birthday bucks.
RAFFLE:
Mark Valentine and Jim Staniford handed out the Raffle prizes.
Winner number 1 – Andy Hall won a pair of AquaSox baseball tickets and Pinot Grigo wine.
Winner number 2 – Brian Hollingshead won the Rose wine.
Winner number 3 – Anna Marie Laurence won the candy.
President Neil stated that anyone who wanted the other two pairs of AquaSox Baseball tickets should come up after the meeting to pick which game and to give a small donation.
PROGRAM: World Community Service, Bridge Receiving Center, Rotary International Convention
Kari Petrasek gave an update on the Dajabon Water Project. The Rotary International Foundation approved a matching grant for the project. The Arlington Rotary Club is supporting the project. The two water tanks will be constructed soon. The groundbreaking was on June 12th. Ed Petersen and Kari will give a yearend report in a couple of weeks.
Tracy Rubstello, Bridge Receiving Center, is grateful for our support this last year. Bridge Receiving Center is a safe place for children to come and stay for 60 days. The organization provides “wrap around” care and trauma care for the children. Seventy one children were supported this year with 63% of these children coming from Snohomish County. They provided 4,000 meals and 3,000 snacks.
Tracy told a story about “G” and how Bridge Receiving Center has helped him and placed him in a home.
There are challenges as the legislation has changed this last year. Trauma and abuse is more than in the past.
President Neil presented Tracy with a donation check as Bridge Receiving Center was the non-profit of choice for this Rotary Year.
Past President John Olson have his top 10 of the Rotary International Convention in Singapore.
- It’s hot.
- A lot of people around the world attend the convention. There were 14,000 people in attendance telling their stories.
- There are Rotary Interest Groups like Wine, Cycling, Flying and many more. Are there ways that we could take more advantage in these Interest Groups?
- Membership was a topic in many sessions. There are resources on how we can attract more members.
- Club Community Assessment – could the Everett Rotary Club do an assessment to look at what the needs are in our community. What do we need to pay attention to these days?
- Entertainment Programs such as a Rotarian started a small Toilet business and it has grown to help people.
- Share ideas and engage members. We are doing good things. What else can we do to engage members?
- Love the swag! Many people love their Rotary gear and wearing pins.
The incoming Rotary International President is from Pittsburgh and the theme is “The Magic of Rotary”.
