THE ROTARY CLUB OF EVERETT Everett Rotary’s April 24, 2018 Meeting #41 (5249) commenced at 12:07 PM at Legion Memorial Golf Club Our Greeters were: Brian Evans and Tony Orso President Will McMahan presided over the meeting, and he led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Russ Kimball then shared the Thought of the Day by quoting some passages from a 1922 novel about Samantha. She gave away everything; but she could still thing, wait, and fast. Those attributes led her to know that she could have less, but still be up for any difficult challenge.

Sean Kelly then sought to introduce Visiting Rotarians and Guests. There being none, we moved on to a new member Classification Talk.

 

New Member Tony Orso commenced his Classification Talk by thanking Ed Peterson for sponsoring him. Mr. Orso’s classification is manufacturing/service. He manages Bridgeways, having had both stops and success along the way with Cascade Culvert, SafetyKleen, and other jobs. He is married to his bride, and they have five children and four grandchildren. Tony confesses to being a camper, hiker, and avid reader.

 

 

Announcements: Judi Edwards reported that volunteers are gathering at the the Food Bank at Volunteers of America on April 26. For more information, please contact Russ Kimball. Eileen Simmons reported that the Youth Exchange Rummage Sale will be held at Compass Health on May 15, from 9 AM – 5 PM. Volunteers are not only welcome, but are needed. Russ Kimball mentioned that Rotary Scholarship notebooks are available for team members of the Scholarship Interview teams. The Rotary Park cleanup will be held on May 5 at Rotary Park, commencing at 9 AM. Rumor has it that Chef Extraordinairre Don Senter will be serving up a meal again. Finally, the Legion Bluffs gravel spread will occur on April 28, starting at 9 AM. Lunch will be served directly after the event. Happy Dollars/Birthday Bucks/Raffle: Jeff Mitchell reported/announced/admitted his milestone birthday, with a $100.00 contribution.

Judi Edwards reported on her niece, an MMA fighter, who has an upcoming title retention bout at Edmonds Community College. Don Senter shared that he is happy that he has not had a birthday recently. MaryBeth Dingledy reported her birthday in advance, saying that she will soon be in Nepal. Mark Valentine shared that he and his wife just returned from a vacation to New Zealand. Unfortunately, he was either unwilling or unable to partake in Bungie Jumping.

Program: Greg Lineberry confessed to having an attorney for a friend, and introduced him to us: Hil Kaman.

Mr. Kaman then presented the “Safe Streets” program Mr. Kaman shared that, with Rotary’s help, ther are 170 hew housing units for needy, unsheltered people in Snohomish County. This step, however, only fills about one-third of the present need.

 

The Safe Streets Directive was boosted in 2014 through the support of then-Mayor Ray Stephanson. The Street Lives Issues required the coordinated efforts of several agencies tother with the community. Most recently, the Safe Streets Directive has five focus points: 1. Housing; 2. Diversion; 3. Outreach and Enforcement; 4. Education and Engagement; and 5. Evaluation and Funding.

 

President McMahan thanked all the contributors and guests. He then announced that the next program would be “Gates Foundation,” presented by Kellie Sloan and introduced by Sean Kelly.
