Rotary Log 3/29/2016

Minutes of the meeting of March 29, 2016 #36 (5145) :
The meeting was called to order byt President, Deborah Wright who then lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Thought of the Day was a prayer of thanks by Will McMahan.
Amy Norman intooduced two guests whose names I missed. We were greeted by Andrea Sekora and Michael Kvistad.
Scott Forslund gave his classification talk which included facts about his wife being a family therapist, his two daughters and favorite hobby of woodworking.  He also told us about his job at Providence Hospital and his leadership position with “Live Healthy 20/20”, both of which follow his plan for helping to create a more healthy community.  His sponsor is Dennis Smith.

Will McMahan set the stage for the Walk-a-thon to benefit the AVID program which is to be Everett Rotary’s “signature project.  It will be on May 7th.
Shelley Smith told us that the membership committee is looking for new members from classifications in Women’s Clothing or Counseling Services.
Eileen Simmons reminded us that Thursday’s volunteering opportunity is at the VOA Food Bank.
Larry O’Donnell’s Rotary History Moment was about Congress declaring war on Germany 99 years ago and the newly formed Everett Rotary helping to construct the Armory which didn’t come to fruition until after the was was over—must have hit some “red tape.”

Jim Staniford’s National Holiday of the Day = National Mom & Pop Business Day.

Firesides are scheduled for April 14th at Jesse O’Brien’s home and on April 26th with Glen Bachman.  Please sign up.

Judge Bowden told us about the $10,000 project for the Dominican Republic where he and Greg Lineberry are traveling soon.  He suggested we start planning for the upcoming November trip or possibly next Spring.

Happy Bucks:  Judi was happy for the UW Women;
Andrea was grateful for the AVID speakers; Maddy for a week in the Honduras;
Rich Toyer reminded us that it was Vietnam Veterans’ Day—Deb asked our veterans to stand and they were honored with our applause.
Steve Miller’s “happy” was missed (Sorry);
J
Janice is looking for 3 or 4 Youth Exchange Host families;
Nesse went to the doctor; Dennis is 67 and is proud of Scott.
Scott wished us a late Happy Easter and his daughter is coming home;
Bruce is 58;
Paul Pitre announced the appointment of Dr. Kirk Schulz as president of WSU but didn’t have any ready cash; Paul Stoot came to his rescue with the 5 bucks and finally,
Josh invited everyone to the Schack Center on 4/21 to witness the winner of a contest for the “Emerging Leader of 2016.”

Raffle:  Wine, carmel corn, coffee, a Rotary pencil holder, more wine and more carmel corn were won by Ed Peterson and Mark Nesse.
Tammy Dunn introduced Calvin Goings from the Small Business Administration.  Calvin told
Us that the SBA has many useful tools help the community; that half the jobs in the community are small business and that 65% net of new jobs are in small business.  He told us of the 3 “Cs”:  Capital—guaranteed loans to support business, growth and expansion; Contracts—government contracts for goods and services; and Access to Counseling—seminars, workshops, counseling and the Boots to Business program specifically for the military.

Deborah thanked Calvin and presented him with a certificate commemorating a donation in his name to the Dispute Resolution Center.  She then made the announcements, thanked the members for their contributions and thanked guests for attending.

Deb’s Aphorism: Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.  Lou Holtz
