Meeting #42, #5151
Vice President Jeff Cornish presided over the meeting. He lead us in saying the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Jeff then presented the Thought of the Day mentioning the words of John Finch, Christian missionary in India, “Do your duty as you understand it without attachment to the fruit of the action”.
Mike Hawks lead us in a rousing Boy Scout song written in 1906 or 1907. Starting off with “Oh we’re from Camp Rotary...”
ANNOUNCMENTS:
PDG Don Senter mentioned the May 5th distribution of the Everett Herald, Sports page, that had a typo in the article title “Defensive S**ts” (you fill in the *s). He honored the Herald with a drawing and presented it to Josh O’Connor.
Will McMahan reported that there were great numbers of Avid students and others who participated in the Avid Walk-a-Thon. He will announce the result of the money raised soon and thanked the committee members and participates.
Tim Coulter invited us to the upcoming Rotary Park cleanup May 14th and PDG Don Senter is providing lunch.
Jim Staniford announced it is National “Clean Your Room Day”. Prize for the winner was Fabreze Air Freshner and a Swiffer.
PP Larry O’Donnell rolled back time 71 years to May 7, 1945 reminding us of the date that Nazi Germany surrendered ending WWII in Europe. 116 members of Everett High School were active Military in WWII and 8 Everett Rotarians. All eight of the Everett Rotarians returned: Ed Christie, Hans Culmback, Harold Gunderson, Les Holcomb, Plott Medford, Herbert Neve, Harold Sievers, and Bert Vanderbilt.
Katrina Koons invited us to the 20th Anniversary for Citrine Health. Judi Edwards updated us on the June Meetings include Club Award Presentations on June 21 and the Changing of the Guard, June 28th being held at Comcast Arena starting at 5:30pm $40 per person or $70 per couple.
Sally Lancaster introduced guest Courtney Hooks, Out Bound Rotary Youth Exchange student.
Guests of Paul Pitre included Erin Gocke - Hoffman Construction, Samantha Surath - SRG Partnership, Tim Richey - SRG Partnership, Blake Allman - Hoffman Construction, Glen Lyons - OAC Services Inc, and Stacey Shewell - OAC Services Inc.

Mary Towes - Thank you for helping on a commercial for kids, she will play the commercial for us next week.

Jim Saniford - $100 Thank you to Andrea Sekoura’s daughter Olivia who helped hand out water at the recent AVID event.

PROGRAM INTRODUCTION by Paul Pitre, WSU - North Puget Sound Everett. Paul gave us a overview of the timeline of the WSU building project in Everett. WSU’s goal for the Everett campus is to become a STEM related University. Currently there are four Bachelor degree programs available: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Hospitality Business Management, and Integrated Strategic Communication. Upcoming planned programs include Software Engineering, Data Analytics, and Organic Agriculture.
There are three partners with WSU - Edmonds Community College, Skagit Valley College, and Everett Community College. Students can fulfill the general education requirements by taking their first two years of courses at any community college and then finish their degree by enrolling at WSU in Everett for their junior and senior years.
The State-of-the-art, four-story WSU facility is currently under construction across the street from Everett Community College and is on scheduled to open in the fall of 2017.
PROGRAM: “WSU Everett - Going Vertical” presented by Stacey Shewell, OAC. Stacey Shewell, OAC Project Manager for the building, along with Tim Richey SRG Design Architect, presented slides of the campus plan & discussion of future development. Going up in 2017 will be thousands of square feet of exterior glass and metal panels along with 84,000 bricks. A video showing the time lapse of construction was played along with the WSU fight song. Many local suppliers are participating in the project. The presentation was followed by questions and answers. One of the questions was about the movement of students across Broadway and what will be done to address the back up of traffic that occurs from when students are crossing the road. The answer is that they are considering building a pedestrian bridge across Broadway and will need Congressional support to accomplish that goal. Another question pertained to students parking locally and the demands for more parking. There has been land purchased for parking.
