  THE ROTARY CLUB OF EVERETT

Meeting of November 21, 2017 #20 (5228) was called to order by President Will McMahan, who then led the Pledge of Allegiance.  Thank you to our greeters, Lance Balla and Jessica Mitchell.

TheThought for the Day was presented by PP Larry O’Donnell who talked about his Golden Wedding Anniversary to Joyce and about the golden friends from kindergarten class of 1942 which included Henry Newton, Jerry Solie, Janice White, Jonette and Mike Ryan, Annette and Wes King and Larry's wife Joyce. He gave $100 in honor of them still being friends in 2017 and Jerry having been best man at his wedding.
Opening Song was sung by Mark Valentine, the doctor who still remembers the 60s (!).  Not sure what it was called but the words were “Can’t Find My Way Home.”

Shelley Smith introduced visiting Rotarians and guests who included James Monroe, editor of the Peace Arch Journal, Hugh Minor, Deane’s father and students and parents.

Announcements:
*Student of the Month Presentations:  Cascade High Yasin Alissa, introduced by Bob Beil; Everett High Amy Nguyen introduced by Don Senter; Sequoia High Natalie Prosper introduced by Jeff Moore.  Will provided certificates for the students along with an IOU for the financial planning book donated by Howie Bargreen.
*Sean George supplied the update for the Happy Hour at the Mazatlan last week.
*President Will reminded us of the District Foundation Rotary 5050 Dinner.
*Joe Gaffney reminded us to get signed up for the Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner event on December 8th.
*Will reminded us that there was a card for Mark Nesse who’s recovering from a stroke.
*Amy Norman introduced Darcy from the Interact Club with an invitation to come and meet the youth involved.

Foundation Announcement:
We were reminded of the opportunity to win a Paul Harris by purchasing a card for $50 as part of Foundation month.  The Gates Foundation has agreed to match 2:1 so that if Rotary clubs raise $50 million, Gates will contribute so that it would become $150 million with the goal of
eradicating polio in 3 years!

Happy Dollars/Birthday Bucks/Raffle:

Judge George gave $71 for his birthday; Tammy was happy for the Reader’s Choice Award and that the Skate America program was returning, Rotary Club in Tulsa celebrated 100 years; Mary thanked Rotarians Sean, Josh and Tara for the support and fundraising her agency received.  Don Senter reminded us of the $100 paintings available in the “Art box”, Gail thanked the speakers for the kids and needs items for the raffle for the Nov 29th Ice Cream Social for the AVID kids. United Way announced that they have $1.5 million for core collaborative groups to help families escape poverty. Eileen won detailing at Dwayne Lanes and says her car is like new; and lastly, there is no community service meeting tonight.

The Raffle included wine, cocoa, free lunch, candy and jam and was won by Henry, Bruce and a student family.

Auction of the “special Fruitcake” raised $200 from Jessica Mitchell.  A “found” hat was purchased by Ralph for $20.

The program, “WSU Medical School” was presented by Dr. Larry Schecter, formerly the Chief Medical Officer at Providence Hospital. He told us of the Elson S. Floyd Medical School at WSU which started Aug 18th, 2017 to train
leaders to be “collaboratoids” and provide tele-medicine medical care remotely. He says
the medical world can’t afford to keep up if they continue to practice in the traditional manner.
The program has a WA state focus on diversity, holistic admission process. Everett classes
have enrolled local people and are 73 percent female. Graduates will have a certificate in
leadership, more primary rather than specialty, and will be ready to work in rural community.
While student debt is usually around $250,000 per student, these students will graduate with no debt.  They want to have 75 volunteer training physicians. They need home stay host families, for short term. Dr. Schecter answered questions and was thanked by President Will.
President Will thanked everyone for their contributions, and visitors and guests in
attendance and wished the students well.
