Rotary Log 6.6.17
THE ROTARY CLUB OF EVERETT
Meeting of June 6, 2017 #47 (5205) was called to order by President, Ed Petersen who then led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Our Greeters for today were Jeff Cornish and Dave Schlosser.

Dave Schlosser introduced visiting Rotarians and guests.
Buzz Miller was remembered.

The Thought for the Day was presented by Walt Greenwood.
He has provided it for us here: “Let Us Stand I’ll ask you to stand for this comment. I know it’s more comfortable to sit, but standing up can be a good thing. When we stand, people can see us better. They can see what we stand for. They can see that we are Rotarians. That we stand for peace across the world. That we stand for service above self. They see that we help young people get an education, so they can contribute more to the world. That we are helping to push the terrible disease of polio into the footnotes of history. They see that we send wheel chairs to people who cannot walk. That for the thirsty, we bring water. We help the hungry to build gardens. They know that we measure our actions by a simple four-way test. They will see that when Rotarians stand together, we make a difference. And perhaps they will stand with us.”

President Ed read thank you notes from scholarship recipients Ben Seibert and Zach Demar.

Classification talks:

Rick Comeau told us about his wife Carla and son. He’s from Vancouver BC and is currently the General Manager of the Xfinity Events Center. He said his most challenging task was booking talent.
Danny Tetzlaff came from North Carolina and is currently the General Manager of the Aquasox. He loves the work in baseball and is a long time Rotarian.

Announcements:
1.  Eileen Simmons announced that Clothes for Kids needed help picking up clothes from the Lost and Found at neighboring schools and asked Rotarians to volunteer.
2.  Marc Baker is wanting to retire as our audio-visual specialist and would like to have someone step up. He is willing to train that person to do the job of supporting Rotary in this area.
3.  President Ed announced that there will be a presentation in honor of Steve Saunders of $100,000 to Catholic Community Services for programs for the homeless. The event will take place at the Everett City Council meeting on 6/28 at 12:30. He hopes all Rotarians will attend.

Paul Pitre introduced the program: “Peru Vocational Training Teams from Canada” presented by Mike Hamel and Doug Wickers (Chilliwack Rotary). Mike told us about a medical grant for the people of a mountain village in Peru which will enable them to send teams of medical personnel and supplies to train and treat these people. They are so high in the mountains that it’s nearly impossible to go for treatment and there is none in the village. Doug told us that they raise Alpaca and potatoes, and spin wool for their livelihood. They have a very high mortality rate, minimal health care, no bathroom facilities. Mike and Doug made a global grant application to Rotary International for health education, sand filter latrines and to train women to serve as health volunteers, first responders called “Callies.”

President Ed thanked our speakers and guests and all the happy bucks contributors who raised $500 today.
He announced that the last Board meeting for his Rotary year would be on June 30th at 7:30 am.
He adjourned the meeting and bid us to go out and serve humanity...
