Kathy Webber lead the call for Visiting Guests

followed by the Student of the

Month Presentations.   Our guests included Ed & Susan Nelson,

parents of Sequoia High Student of the Month Jordan Nelson.

 

 

Gary Cohn introduced Cascade High Student of the Month Jada Smith and her

Aunt and Uncle.

Jada is planning to study to become a mental health care professional.

 

Howie Bargreen introduced Kiana Keithly, Everett High Student of the Month, who plans

to study in the field of Physical Therapy.

Other Announcements: Roy Yates reported for the Membership Committee.  This week

the three membership categories to fill are Airport Management, Real Estate Developer,

and Antique Sales.

Will McMahn reported on the Annual Fundraiser and asked that

the team leaders meet today after the Rotary meeting. 

 

Mark Nesse reported on the Centennial Project. 

The Centennial Project recommendations will be presented to

the Board at the January Meeting with the expectation that the Board will have a

decision at their February meeting that will be then brought to the Club.  The two

projects being discussed are:    1.  Support for the Cafeworks project which is

within the Hopeworks project offering training for culinary services.  2.  Support for the

Housing First project which plans to acquire property to start to go to work on the

homeless problems in our area. 

 

Judi Edwards reported that 35 members still need to

pay their bills, due no later than the end of January.  Judi thanked John Rosinski and

his sign company for a new sign at the park.  Also, she thanked Howie Bargreen for coffee

and gift card donations.

 

Past President Mark Valentine gave $50 Happy Bucks and Basketball Bucks.  He

made note of the article in the Herald about one of the Seahawks saying he will

give up pay to stay with the Seahawks. 

Marc Baker has a prize for someone who

knows the identity of the Rotarians shown in the slide presentation (actor & shoes).

Kathryn Goforth gave Happy Bucks for the ability to accompany young musicians

in a concerto.  The young musicians were 10 to 16 years old.  Of note was a 10

year old talented violinist that skillfully played a 3/4 size violin and a 10 year old

pianist who can barely reach the pedals.  

Janet Ellis gave 100 Happy Birthday Bucks in honor of her daughter’s 24th birthday, her son’s 19th birthday, and her own

birthday plus 1. 

Kathy Webber gave Happy Birthday Bucks.

won by Kathryn Beck. Silvertips tickets, Taco Time Coupon Book, Macademia Nuts,

Program Introduction by John Olson:

Marco Azurdia is the Executive Director of the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC).

The Northwest Athletic Conference is the parent organization for 35 Community

Colleges located in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia.  Prior to his

service a NWAC, Azurdia served at Wenatchee Valley College for 20 years in a variety

of administrative and coaching roles, including service as the Head Coach for the

women’s basketball team and Assistant Coach for men’s basketball. 

As Head Coach for the Lady Knights basketball team, he amassed 220 wins, competing

nine times in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NAACC) Playoffs, making seven NWAACC Championship Tournament appearances, and winning multiple league titles. Azurdia has been honored several times by several organizations as “Coach of the Year” including being honored as the “North Central Washington Female Team Coach of the Decade”.  His honors also include the “State of Washington’s Board of Trustees Outstanding Advocate for Equity Award” and the NWAACC “Dutch Triebwasser Award”, recognizing him as the Conterence’s outstanding Administrator.

 

The upcoming Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Champion Tournament will be hosted by Everett Community College and the Snohomish County Sports Commission.  The Tournament will be held March 10th through 16th at Everett Community College.

The NWAC oversees 15 sports & 10 championships at 35 Community Colleges in

Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia.  The organization provides guidance

to the student members inspiring them to focus on “what they are to become” with an

emphasis in three areas- character, community, & competition.  The organization

asks the question “What good is an increase in knowledge without a change in character?”.

The organization states it is essential for students to provide a genuine effort both in sports and in the classroom.  Students need to compete in the classroom just as in their sport.

Students learn that “Helping Others, Helps All” and to “Give more than what is expected”.

The NWAC believes that “our students deserve great experiences” as a result of their

efforts in the three focus areas. NWAC Sanctioned Sports include Soccer, Cross Country, Volleyball, Basketball, Baseball, Golf, Tennis, Track & Field. 

 

Thirty-two teams have competed in the last 14 tournaments, all held in the Tri-Cities area.

The tournaments generate approximately $80,000 to the community.  This year the

Tournament is moving onto Campuses in the Northwest Region.  The Tournament is

being organized with the #1 Seed hosting the #4 Seed, the #2 Seed hosting the #3

Seed, etc...   There are 8 men’s teams and 7 women’s teams who will be competing

in 2 championship games.   This is a Northwest Community Service Project.

Thank you to Tammy Dunn and others who have worked hard to bring this event

to Snohomish County.
